Wild Camping???

Postby OldManKiwi » Tue 02 Mar, 2021 7:28 pm

New here, first time post.
As a beginner bushwalker, I have a question on hiking and camping in Victorian State parks.
I'm talking about camping away from where vehicles can go.
Can a hiker camp anywhere in a park or are they confined to designated camp sites, on a trail only?
Look forward to your answers and help.

Dispersed camping in Vic forests and parks is allowed except a few minor places which are listed in the regulations (but they are near roads also) and anywhere there is a sign. Usually signs are only at places you can drive into as well. You are also not supposed to camp within 20m of a watercourse. Welcome to the forum. Have fun.

"camping away from where vehicles can go."

This is generally the name of the game.

Although at The Prom . camping away from designated hike in campsites is not permitted.

On The Baw Baws and in much of the Alpine N.P. usually people camp where there is water nearby and flat and sheltered tent sites can be found.

By State parks, do you mean State forests or National parks?
State forests are generally more relaxed, allowing dogs, camping, etc than National parks, which disallow dogs, and have some camping restrictions varying from park to park.

Thankyou Xplora, paidal_chalne_vala, Baeng72 & neilmny for your comments.
I live in West Melbourne, so was looking at camping in the parks west to north west out this side. As they're the easiest to get to for weekend excursions.
Yes I see a few parks are clamping down on dispersed camping.
But 20 meter etiquette rule from water courses is handy to know.
Thankyou for your help.

If you carry in water and bury your toilet waste with a small hand spade away from water courses then somewhere like the *&^%$#@! ears in the Grampians would be good for bush camping. There is a flat spot on the track that marked with rock cairns , before the summit lookout, that would be a good campsite.
