Lerderderg River Walks - Drinking Water?

Postby plottwisted » Sat 20 Mar, 2021 9:56 am

Hi all
I'm thinking of doing a hike in Lerdergerg Gorge area in April as an introduction overnight hike with kids. Does anyone know if the quality/quantity of water in the river at this time of year (April) can be relied upon for drinking water (with sterilisation if necessary)? I did the East Walk along the Lerderderg River in summer about 5 years ago and the river water was pretty stagnant and not suitable for drinking without serious filtering.
Thinking of camping at Mine Camp (on East Walk) or Ah Kows Mine site on Bears Circuit.
Thanks
Kalu

I was there 20th Feb and the river was flowing all the way.
I was at blackwood/upper Lerdiderg and it was also flowing.
But I would always filter or at least boil any drinking water. I have seen too many dead goats in the gully to trust the water quality not to mention human activity.

If you walk around Blackwood long enough you find things...I found a house on a steep embankment
with an overflowing septic tank situated around 40 metres from the Lerderderg River, so i wouldn't
drink the water south of Blackwood at all unless its in the middle of winter with three days of rain prior.

The river seems fine but I would never drink anything without filtering.
