Big Pats recreation area

Postby Dexter » Thu 08 Apr, 2021 3:36 pm

Hey everyone!

Looking to do a bit of cruisey car camping with some day walks thrown in. I've camped at Starlings Gap before and head towards Ada #2 campsite and back... but struggling to find much info online about camping at Big Pats, or the Ada Tree picnic area (if that's even allowed?). All my searching brings up info on Starlings Gap campground... which is great, but was there only a couple of months back and thought somewhere else would have been nice. From memory both Big Pats and Ada Tree have some toilets... not sure about fire pits? Any thoughts or suggestions for a nice camp area with minimal humans would be great!

About 2km from ada tree is the federal mill camp site. You have to walk there as the roads for parks vehicles only. Has some fire pits from past camper's. Quite ugly site considering the surrounding beauty. If you want 5km or so, hike then ada 2 camp site is nice.

Yeah Ada #2 is nice, I've camped there before. But after somewhere I can car camp at and do some small day walks from. It might just have to be Starlings Gap again if there's nothing else similar... it's quite a nice spot. Latrobe River camping area was another thought, but might also be busier than Starlings.

Big Pats is easy to access from Warburton. Has drop toilets, picnic table, and most probably will have people if it's a weekend.
There's a track up to Starlings that I've walked a few times.

Starlings might be a quieter option then? Last time I was there I had the place to myself which was bliss.

Starlings is pretty popular too. It's bigger I think than Big Pats.
When I've walked through Big Pats, there's usually been someone, but likewise someone at Starlings, but I guess that's weekends for you.

Yeah damn humans! Haha. Hopefully it's not packed out with load music and motorbikes.

Have you been to Latrobe River campsite?
