Feathertop / Bungalow Spur car parking

Postby Mr Bean » Mon 17 May, 2021 4:21 pm

Just trying to clarify, is the car parking for this walk now moved down the road towards Harrietville? I've seen snippets of posts in the past few months suggesting this was the case. We are looking at doing Feathertop this weekend before winter kicks in.

You can drop off people and packs at the start, then go about 500 metres down the road, parking on the south (left) side, easily seen as Camm advises. In the last week there was snow down to 700 metres. Much will have melted, but there could be some higher up. The Hotham web-cams give an idea of the situation. https://www.mthotham.com.au/on-mountain ... /snow-cams

The last tab on viewtopic.php?f=37&t=31987&start=120 has a map and a blurry picture.

I drove through Harrietville a few weeks ago (pre-lockdown) and took a quick detour to have a look at the new arrangements. The temporary car park is there with a variable message board alerting people to it, but interestingly there didn't seem to be any signs yet prohibiting parking at the beginning of the track (there were a couple of cars parked there and none at the new carpark). I imagine they will be put there once it warms up again later in the year.

If there are no signs then you can park at the start of the track. The local council is probably relying on goodwill, people following instructions and lack of knowledge of the Road Safety Act 1986 and regulations. There could be a lack of funding.

The Bungalow spur is very popular in winter . Many people still park at the trail head car park in winter . A number of ill equipped and poorly attired people venture up there when the snow is deep and
the air temperature is very cold. It is only a matter of time until something quite unfortunate happens to some of these ill prepared people.
