Postby Stew63 » Wed 20 Apr, 2022 3:56 am

Could some kind member please advise me what the mobile phone coverage is like along the MtSpec/CrossCutSaw/Howitt/Magdala/KingBilly route please?

Hi Stew63,
General rule of thumb: if you have line of sight with Mt Buller, you're golden.
Down lower, or behind a big lump of mountain, it depends.

I use Optus (I read Telstra is better for coverage), and I get phone/4G on Howitt, West Peak, Big Hill, Magdala, Cross cut section near Howitt (haven't done it all).
King Billy been close, and had coverage near where the AAWT meets 4WD track that heads to Lovicks.
I still haven't made it to Mt Spec, but I imagine up high would be OK.
I can get 4G at Gantner Hut/Mac Springs, just walk up the little knoll beside the hut. I've sent SMS, made phone calls, etc there.
In the Howqua valley, get phone/4G from first rock band on Helicopter Spur and above and about the time you see the window on Mt Magdala climbing Howitt Spur (though it will be patchy depending on terrain).
Hope that helps.

This sums it up pretty well. I doubt there will be much difference between Optus and Telstra if you are getting signal from Buller. Mt. Spec is good.

I got a two bar phone signal for my Optus phone at King Billy saddle recently.
