Looking for a good 1 nighter early September

Prefer not alpine as it’s still a touch cold for us

Our sleep kits rated to -1 comfort

Recently my friend and I have completed

Mount Buller to Mount Stirling via Howqua Gap
Sugarloaf Peak and South Jawbone Peak Loop

Looking for something similar in difficulty and keen to hear some recommendations from you folks (:

The Stirling and Razorback walks are quite reasonable, climbing on the former and technical on the latter. the alps is out - too much snow and bad weather. Central Victoria generally has less precipitation, so perhaps look at the Bendigo and Ingleburn regions. Whipstick and Melville Caves are not as steep as the two walks you cite, so you could go further each day.

Also you could walk away from home, make camp for the night then come back.

The Goldfields track is a good option - cold but usually drier.

If you can extend to 2 nights, a good section is walking from the Castlemaine train station to the Bendigo train station.
I usually leave my car at Castlemaine then catch the train back.

Lerderderg; Lohs lane to the river via Bears Head. This involves some scrambling near the base of the spur. There are suitable tent sites. Next day cross the river if safe and visit Old River falls. There is an intermittent footpad but no track. Then simply return.

I'm keeping eye on this too for some ideas. That Goldfields track sounds fun!

Where do you normally camp?

Go midweek, as September is when mountain biking groups pretty much take over a lot of the track, coming from as far away as Gisborne and Kyneton, but locally Castlemaine and Daylesford groups too.

Where do you normally camp?

Bush camping in the parks.

I normally camp at remote spots, often not formal campsites. One definition of a formal campsite is a campsite established by a land authority. This is different to campsites that are in logical places such as clearings beside rivers or creeks and are formed over time. Such places have no facilities, just flat grassy ground and usually water. Another sort of campsite is off track, perhaps away from water. Summits are especially nice. None cost anything except the effort to get there.

The Sheepyard flat region provides a few options without the Alpine cold if you stay low down, depending on how far you want to walk.

You can hike from there to Ritchies hut, Pikes Flat, Bindaree Hut or the Upper Howqua camping area and then hike back. You can shorten the hike by starting at 7 or 8 mile flat. 8 mile is closed until the gates open, but you can park outside the gate. Good camping at Ritchies, Pikes, Bindaree and Upper Howqua. Nice river views and an enjoyable overnight.

Otherwise you can start further down at Running Creek and hike up to Fry’s Hut or Sheepyard and back.

Mornington Peninsula N.P. Bay to Bay walk . I think there is a campsite somewhere along the walk from Dromana to Bushranger's bay.
