The Art of Walking (Great Ocean Walk Promo DVD)

Postby flatfoot » Wed 30 Jun, 2010 10:53 pm

Has anyone else seen this DVD ... ? I just watched it. It's a promo DVD that arrived with my subscription copy of the "Great Walks" magazine (the latest "Bumper Annual Edition").

It really showcases the stunning beauty of this section of the Victorian coast. It does this through a number of guest walkers that are escorted by a ranger on different sections of the walk. The guest walkers are:

- John Francis - "The Planetwalker"
- Katarina Witt - the German Figure Skater
- Michael Milton - an Australian Paralympian

These guest walkers and the ranger each give different perspectives on the walk. Yes it's promo material but it was great to watch.

Something else to add to my "to do" list.

Agreed... It was definitely a good watch! John Francis and Michael Milton are both very inspiring people. Since it's about the walk itself and not about one particular tour company, it doesnt really seem like a promo. Highly recommended!

Hey Flatfoot.......
Yep walked it, watched it & loved it! I suggest you do it!
I was stoked when this DVD turned up. Allowed me to show the friends & fam what I'd done without putting them through the 100's of photos of sand, plants, sky, rocks, waves...........you know!
I walked the GOW in Aug2009 solo & hardly saw anyone else out there, just a couple of tourists where the cars can pull in for a lookout, a dude fishing from the beach near his house! & a Parkie with a big grin!
Now I'm trying to get someone to come along again as I reckon it's a ripper for someone keen to step up and take on a "few nights multi-day walk". You could stretch it out to 9 days if you had good weather, as there are a couple of public access camping sites in between GOW sites, making some leisurely afternoons by the ocean.......Hmmmmmm

I received the DVD with The Sunday Age a couple of months ago and having walked part of The Great Ocean Walk (Blanket Bay to Cape Otway Light House on Australia day long weekend in 2009), thought it would be interesting. Having watched it, I was very impressed - well done, with some great scenery. Made me even keener to do more of the GOW.

Funnily enough I found the DVD again today, whilst looking for something else! Also found this great website/forum today!

I must remember the DVD next time I'm talking to friends about doing some of the GOW with me!

I watched this when it came out with The Sunday Age. It got me keen on the walk, and I knocked out a section of it (from Aire River to The Gables) in June. The weather held up for pretty much the whole time we were walking and I really enjoyed it! I hope to get back there and knock off some other sections of it.

I don't know if I would walk it over the x-mas period as I imagine it would be really busy; also the walkers journals at Aire River had complaints of "bogans" camping at the Aire River campground (seperate to the GOW campground), and using all of the rainwater from the tanks which are there for those doing the walk.
