Trying to find a photo,so many digital records these days... however there used to be shelves repurposed from explosives boxes. I found these quite endearing in a small shack.

"Endearing" . . . well, maybe, as long as they're empty.

Tree Damage to Jans/Staggs Hut

Jans Hut or Staggs Hut, located in the Thomson River State Forest on the western side of Thomson Dam, was badly damaged by a falling tree during the recent severe weather in Gippsland. The Victorian High Country Huts Association (VHCHA) is working with the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning (DELWP) on assessing the damage and possible repairs in the spring (depending on the extent of damage ). If you are planning to bushwalk in this area and intend to use this hut, please make alternative arrangements as it is not safe for use. Any queries please contact [email protected].

Jans Hut, whilst hidden, is a popular hiking destination for those in the know either as a side trip from the Australian Alps Walking Track or the easier route using a logging track in the State Forest. Our Bushwalking Tracks and Conservation (BTAC) team has offered its services to the VHCHA to support any make-safe or repair works it may undertake.

JAN'S HUT REPAIRED
Jan's or Staggs Hut in the Thomson Valley north of the Thomson Dam, has been repaired by DELWP after it was badly damaged when a tree fell on it in June 2021. The VHCHA representative for the area, Noel Lees, went in for a look. We think DELWP and their contractor did a fantastic job, restoring the hut with great sensitivity for the heritage value. We have posted some before and after shots.
The hut is only reachable after a several km walk across difficult terrain from Mt Erica carpark or Thomson Valley Road, and is not easily found. It has therefore acquired a bit of a reputation with bushwalkers as a challenge destination.

I went to visit Jan's Hut before it was damaged by a falling tree. If you already know the way then the route from the Thomson valley road is not that difficult to walk .I will go and have a look at the rebuilt hut at some stage.

Off topic, anyone tried to locate the crash site of the Cessna plane in 2006 on Mt Kernot? or was the wreckage removed ? if not nature has swallowed it?......

A GPX route exists for the track from Thompson Valley Road to Jan's Hut (Hut Road) on AllTrails.
It is a known MTB route for Gippsland MTB groups (Warragul).
