Cooktown - Gamaay Dreaming Track

Postby ofuros » Wed 21 Jul, 2021 6:10 pm

If you're in the area. 8)
Been open for a few years now, but new to me...
Starts with a boat ride across the Endeavour River at Cooktown, along beaches over peaks to Knob Point, Hopevale.

May be possible to extend to Elim Beach campground, Hopevale, for a longer walk.

Not sure if there's pickup available at the end or if you have to retrace your steps. I'll enquire.

Big dreams...perhaps a Daintree to the Cape York long distance track one day...but don't hold your breath.

Just heard back, track is unavailable at the moment...ranger base going in, eco-friendly toilets & access road upgrades.

Still closed...roughly to the end of the year.

Extendable to Cape Bedford, past Coloured Dunes to McIvor River return or even continue onto Cape Flattery, cutting inland to bypass the crocodile infested McIvor River for a even longer coastal exploration.
If you can organise a ride back with a adventurous 4wdriver, cruising yachty or company/chartered flight, so much the better... it's remote.

Striated silica sand dunes give away the direction of local trade winds....

Quick update. Apparently it's a private airstrip at Cape Flattery, so unless you have mine related business or it's a emergency, it's a no go to FIFO.
So, 4wd, sail or walk all the way in & out are the limited options.

Maybe using the Gamaay track then onto Cape Bedford return is a more realistic goal. Base yourself at Elim beach with side trips to Cape Bedford, Coloured Dunes & McIvor River.

...still would love to do Cape Flattery one day though.

Inland vehicle tracks would make it an interesting circuit, depending on what the river crossings (and crocs) are like.

Indeed, and there are a few nice ridges between those tracks to explore too... 8)
