Bushwalk Australia

Hi all.

We are moving to Brissy in the next fortnight and Im after some advice on best walks in the area. I plan on having a wander up in the d'aguillar a bit but what I need is some nice 2-3 hour/half day walks that I can zip off early on a sat or sun morning and do. Being a mum to a young toddler makes it hard to get away for lots of loooong walks (though I have a very tolerant hubby . Ill head to the Brisbane bushwalkers meeting night and hopefully join but it would be nice to find some little walks to pic off myself. Any thoughts or good books with notes/sketch maps etc.would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bluegum mic,

'Take A Walk in South-East Queensland" by John & Lyn Daly, is the local bible up here...& is a great resource.
If you can't track one down online, the local library should be able to help you.

Also...http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/parks/
Will give you the lowdown on a local walks, camping & pinic areas up & down the coast.
You can usually print out a map of the tracks & surrounds....before heading out.

That should get you started....enjoy your time here.

I find Mt Coot-tha a handy location for 2-3 hour walks when I feel the need to get into the bush when I don’t have a whole day up my sleeve. It has a range of tracks all through the area and if you want to make longer journeys you can link up with the tracks around Enoggera Reservoir and further up into D’Aguilar National Park, via Gap Creek on the western side of the mountain (Mt Coot-tha is a part the range). Many use Coot-tha as a training ground for longer hikes, so it is not unusual to see walkers with their full packs out on the tracks. And as ofuros mentioned, the Daly’s Take a walk book is a very good investment.

Super guys. Exactly what Im looking for. Obviously once every month or two I try and get out for an overnighter/longer walk but I can usually sneek one in weekly so long as its early and or shortish. I've got a couple of the Daly books and will grab this one off the website too.

If you have half a day consider heading out south west to White Rock, Flinders Peak, Mt Edwards, Mt Greville, Mt Mitchell, Mt Cordeaux-Bare Rock (Cunninghams Gap) all relativley straightforward two-three hour treks plus drive time. You'll get to know the lay of the land and whet your appetite for the bigger walks on the Main Range as these will be in full view from these spots.

Although its not somewhere you'll probably frequent regularly, but a lap around Venman National Park on Mt Cotton is not a bad way to spend a couple hours on a weekend.
