Lake Hanson, Twisted Lakes

Postby walkabout » Mon 28 Apr, 2014 7:33 pm

Spent the day on Sunday walking to Twisted Lakes via Lake Hanson for the first time. Had been to Hanson's Peak before, but not beyond. The track was very muddy and steep in places and took longer than we thought it would. Had wonderful views to the east towards the Central Plateau from our morning tea spot. The day started out very cool and slightly overcast but quickly cleared and sparkled. After leaving Twisted Lakes we started the climb up to the face track, but had second thoughts and turned back as we were running out of time and not having been across that way before, didn't know what to expect time wise. From where we joined the Lake Hanson track in the morning to when we were climbing to the face track we never saw another person. Twisted Lakes are beautiful. If going that way again, I don't think I would use the Lake Hanson track, even though we thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of being the only people in paradise.

Hey Walkabout,

Thanks for the report and pics. I never get tired of it.
I can relate to those experiences of being there without the people! Snowshoes helped me last year in that way. :D

Are you fairly new to the area? Might bump into you one day, since we're in the same part of the state.

Thanks Tortoise.
Have been in Tas 3 years. The intention always was to do some bushwalking and I'm finally getting around to it, but it's a steep learning curve and there's a lot to learn. Unfortunately age moves faster than experience and walks I could do only a few years ago are now getting harder (much harder!)

I love seeing people getting into bushwalking, at any age. I knew someone who didn't take it up till she was 67, and did the most amazing multi-day walks! And I have other friends in their 70s/80s who have still been able to do 6 day walks. :) So don't limit yourself too much just yet.

I also found (till I sprained my ankle recently :( ) that I was able to get fitter' than I've ever been before, even though i'm up over the hill and heading down the other side. That came through the opportunity to do lots of walks - probably helped at one point by going to the gym, but really, I just want to be out in the bush.

Oh, and another significant factor for me was reducing the weight of my pack by over a third, with lighter weight gear, and deciding I could leave some things at home. I almost floated up to Marion's Lookout last time!

Thanks for sharing, great pics.

One of the next walks on our list up at Scott Kilvert Hut so it would be nice to get some sunny weather like that ;)
