Mt Connection

Had a quick trip to Hobart a couple of weeks back and had just enough time to fit in a quick walk on the Wellington range. Having finished my summer Tassie visit on 149 mountains and 298 points overall, a two point peak would have been good but was beyond the time we had. Mt Connection looked to be close enough, so we drove to Big Bend and headed off down the fire trail into a howling wind and the odd sprinkle of rain. About half an hour down the trail, we took a walking track off to the left and followed that through low eucalypts initially then open heathland. There's even a nice looking campsite in the middle of the heath in a small patch of trees. From there, the track climbs up the flank of Mt Connection on the way to Colin's Bonnett. The track doesn't actually make the top, and as usual, I started into the scrub too early. No worries though, as it wasn't much of an issue at all. The wind was still blowing pretty well on top, with the clouds up giving some views to the Huon valley, Mt Dromedary and Colin's Bonnett. There's also a sparsely cairned route back to the track which took all of two minutes to follow. Retracing our steps, we were back at the car in around 2 hours 30 minutes, complete with peak 150 in the bag. Quite a nice walk all up, and I'd hope to have a leisurely camp up there some time with a couple of bottles of wine!

Cheers
Wello
