Trip to plane wreck near Mt Queahgong

Tue 29 Oct, 2013 3:25 pm

A couple of weekends back a mate and I set out tovisit this wreck which went down in bad weather in 1968 and which has been referred to on another post. We drove up to Dunphys late on Saturday and set out about 5:30PM.

Pleasant light as we set out.

We climbed Ironpot Mt and soon located the turn off to Pots and Pans Spur.

(Can anyone tell me how to add another photo at this point? I can't seem to get the attachment button back?)

Gee I'm hopeless

You've improved a lot from no photos Kanangra, don't give up yet!

When you insert your attachment into the post and you want to insert another, you need to click again on the "Upload attachment" tab beneath the "Save draft", "Preview" and "Submit" buttons.
It is next to the "Options" tab.

As I was saying we headed off down Pots and Pans Spur which is a pleasant and open spur to Breakfast Ck.

We reached the creek at the Blackhorse junction and quickly walked down to Frying Pan Flat where we set up camp.

We were away early and had breakfast at the junction with the Cox's.

Before heading off we took a look at the memorial plaque to Oonagh Kennedy who drowned here in the flooded river in 1968.

TBC.

Haha, you're getting there!

What you need to do is to insert the photos into your post.

Once you have attached a photo, click on your post at the spot where you want the photo to appear (so that the little blinking line is there). Once you have done that, just click on the "Place inline" button for the photo that you want to insert. Then some text that looks like this

[attachment=0]Name of photo you are inserting.jpg[/ attachment]

will appear. That means that the photo listed above will appear there. You can then do the same process for the rest of your attachments.

Be sure that everything looks the way is should by clicking the "Preview" button next to "Submit" before posting.

Looking forward to the rest of the trip report!

We then set off down river. The going here was very good with extensive grassy banks.

Pleasant going downstream.

We arrived at what we thought was the foot of Gaspers Buttress but were just a little downstream.

From there we set off uphill very steeply. Hadn't gone far when we startled this local.

Before long some views started to open up.

I'm told 5 is the maximum attachments? Is that right? I was just getting on a roll.

We dragged ourselves up to Mt Heartbreaker and then Mt Jenolan. The ridge going was mostly clear.

PA134422 (Medium).JPG
Typical going along the ridge.

Not far past Qeahgong on a particularly broken section of ridge we caught a glimpse of the wreck off to the side of the ridge on the right.

We made our way over to it and found quite a bit remaining.

A few had beaten us to it.

I couldn't resist this shot.

The propellar was surprisingly heavy.

It was now past midday so after taking a souvenir each we headed back.

On the way down we had some great views.

On the way back we located and took Gaspers Buttress which was clear all the way down.

After the long descent we were greeted by a pretty flat at the bottom.

From there it was a pleasant walk back upstream in the afternoon light.

From the junction it was a stiff haul up Ironmonger Spur. We were back at the cars just on dusk. An excellent little trip.

Great report Kanangara. Our paths must have crossed within a few ks that day. Is there a discernable route up Ironmonger spur or do you play it by ear?

No mate these days there is a very clear track all the way up. Very clear and easy to follow. There is a cairn at the top.

Wonderful photos Kanangra!
Looks like you had a great trip.
And I like the 'learn as you go approach!'
"Ahhh, I'm stuck, what do I do next???"
(I so understand this? :? )
And then Allchin09 helps out.
Awesome stuff! :D

Hi all. I've only just joined the forum so I don't seem to have the permission to send private messages. I am very keen to check out the crash site. I'd be very grateful if someone could give me the grid reference so I know more than the fact that the site is located somewhere on the Southern end of Mt. Queahgong.

Let me know how you go. Tip; it is best if you go up the correct Gaspers buttress. All routes are steep but the one we took was a back breaker.

Just a few little pieces. I wasn't lugging that propeller out.

This crash occurred on Tuesday 9 April 1968. The pilot was my father Murray Waddell. He was flying solo from Bankstown airport to Lake Cargelligo. He was 50 years old and left a wife and two sons aged 12 and 16 (I was the older). It is difficult to tell exactly what happened. It seems that cloud came down and there were visibility problems. He appears to have been very unlucky as he struck the ridge just below the peak. On that day we became aware early in the day that the plane was missing and a search was being undertaken. Late in the day the police came to our door and informed us that the wreckage had been sighted but that it would not be possible to access it until the next day. So we had to wait until the next day to have the worst confirmed.
