A Keen 5 y.o. Bushwalker

My daughter is growing up with bushwalking. I found her drawing and writing this afternoon:

It's great to see young people as keen as that for bushwalking. I've just turned 15 and bushwalking is practically my life outside of school. I haven't got any friends that are interested in bushwalking. It's a very unique interest for kids these days, which makes it hard. All the best to her finding like-minded friends in the future.

Fantastic. My kids went on overnight walks from about the age of three and all of them still enjoy walking and outdoor pursuits generally. They range in age from 25 - 32 now.

That's great. It's such an infectious passion to share. I've got a 3 year old (and a pregnant wife) with similar leanings, or at least it seems so at such an early stage. She's frequently hounding me about hiking and asking for maps and a hiking pole or whatever accoutrements she has in her mind at the time. We've done some short walks but we've not done an overnight hike yet. Last night we set up the tent and pretended we were off in the wild. She loved it until around 5am she asked if she could have some toast and apples and go inside. Wasn't a bad first off. She'd like to do it again tonight too.

My 16yo daughter has become quite selective (snobby!) about where she will walk. If it doesn't have a decent climb and some rough terrain then she won't bother getting out of bed. She also prefers it when a friend joins us. Luckily, for both of us, one of her best friends comes from a bushwalking family so she has her own gear and plenty of experience. Our 8yo has been begging for an overnighter for a while. I'd better get on with it while she is still interested.

Well gosh darn I'm nearly 20, but I have been a bushwalker since day dot. When I have kids I am so keen to bring them with me! Such a good thing to get into, I think it gives you a lot of great values. I know I am a lot better off for being brought up in the bush, scrambling up mountains. When I look at a lot of people my age there isn't many people with good values. They all seem to be interested in drinking, drugs and forgetting their nights.

I will never forget some of the nights I've had sleeping under the stars.

Yeah, the kid that drew the picture in the OP has been on bushwalks with us since just a few weeks old. She keeps nagging me to take her bushwalking which is better than some of the other things she nags me about.

If my kid nagged me to go bushwalking at age 5, I'd be a happy dad!
