Probably there's a very obvious answer that I haven't thought of yet. But what do people do with their spare gas canisters and food when on multiple multi-day walks?

Many places the car has to be parked in the sun at least some of the day. Ice in the esky will only last a couple of days. Temperature inside the esky, even under other insulation, gets hot after a few days. Temperature in the car can get past the 50 degrees C recommended for storing gas canisters. Plus I'm not that keen on my dehyd meat and chicken cooking in the car so to speak.

Wondering what other people do (apart from using metho )?

Gas cannisters are not a problem even at 50deg.
Food is another matter...try to find some shade!!

If you use a 2lt bottle as an " Ice Block" you should get a bit longer than a couple of days also your Dehydrated food should not suffer too much as it will have been subjected to high temps to make it .

Not that I have any experiences in your predicament, but how about hiding it somewhere in the bush? Under a rock, shade or bury them. Apart from the fuel tank, hate the idea of additional flammables in the cabin of a car. But if well wrapped in thick rags, can't imagine the tanks will reach their critical temperature.

One way is to sit them on top of the car's tyres or suspension. They will be outside and shaded by the car and relatively well hidden. Just don't forget to remove them before driving off.

I have tried the 2l juice container and 2 l ice-cream container options, but after a few days it can be hot in the esky despite insulation around it as well.

I wondered about hiding them in the bush, but it seems a bit of a hassle. I do like the idea of under the car - WITH A BIG NOTE in the car to remind me before I drive off.

Food would be trickier. I might need to find a metal possum-proof, rat-proof, ant-proof etc container. Then under the car should work for that too.

That'd do it! I just need to find a cheap one in Tassie.

You could always leave the gas canister under the bonnet in the engine bay somewhere. Just remember to put a note on your car key tied on with rubber band.
Food I'm not sure about but maybe under the hood somewhere if you have an old car with room under it. Otherwise I'd stash it in the bush nearby in a sturdy container or better still containers so you don't loose the lot if one gets found by something or someone.
