Too much to choose from and between !!**!!

Postby Moondog55 » Fri 22 Jun, 2018 5:11 pm

Life was so much easier when I was younger and only had 1 of anything. Packing for Monday and I have too many choices, 3 rucksacks 5 mattresses 3 winter sleeping bags plus another full Arctic system
I just counted 7 pot sets [ but only 5 stoves, 2 of which don't count because they are DIY cat and super-cat stoves] and more cups and mugs than I care to count. At least choosing a tent was easy enough The new lavvu plus a bivvy and small tarp
I'm not really sure how I came to have so much stuff, maybe this is why I have no money tho

Yep. Money is the source of it. "Less is more" say some.

One of my Grandfathers moved house yearly.
The kids had to pack their own stuff. By moving yearly stuff got thrown out .. yearly. You got a fresh room to organise things.

I too need to throw stuff out, but as an ex-colleague says .. a week after you throw it away you will want it...
I am making good use of the council libraries now - saves finding another bookcase .. I have too many books and magazines now. Maps I don't count ... and there are a few of them! I should check if I have scanned them and put those into a 'disposable' pile?
There should be a library for this stuff... a backpack library? Humm I draw the line at thermals, shoes and boots .. they wear out too quickly anyway.

1) There is no such thing as 'too much'' bushwalking gear.

2) But the memories . . .

There are two conflicting rules you have to apply:

1. The number of (insert name of gear here) you need is the number you currently have plus one.

2. The number of (insert name of gear here) you need is the number where your partner leaves you minus one.

Just bought a block of Old Gold Jamaican Rum'N'Raisin, I like it too much ... so I only buy it when it is on special or for a special occasion ... it is on special at my local Coles store.

For rule 2 there is 'off site storage', commercial, family or friends.
Unfortunately rule 1 is a constant, with progression of equipment and changes of trip conditions.

How right, while when I was young, even having 1 of something is a rarity. Just have to make do a lot of the time. These days, it's being able to find that n+1 item that you have and want. Where the fxxx is it? Memory loss along with storage issues.
Just move it!

I must start going through all my gear. I think a serious destash is in order. There may be some bargains coming soon for people needing gear, or more gear. I did finally manage to sell my J&H Flouro Ultra tho

Come to my region, the climate destroys things in storage, you will have less choices to worry about.

Pedantic button now off.
I'm familiar with the mildew problem but it doesn't only happen in the tropics and sub tropics, unfortunately the garage roof needs replacing so I need much less stuff so I can demolish and rebuild and I really don't "need" as many sets of gear as I seem to have accumulated

Well noted, but now did you mean 'sub tropics', or 'subtropics' :D

Actually tropics aren't the problem- Darwin beats us for heat. Its our 12ft of rain a year and rainforest spore loads that make it a different kettle of fish. Apologies for the thread divert anyway, it was a throw away dig at my own area.

I have several "Sets" of gear, my LW summer walking kit which has stayed pretty much the same for decades, my winter basecamp set which changes almost constantly and the set of gear I am putting together for the Deep Winter trip in 2020. So Cecile says the other day "Ted, you NEVER go walking in summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

True but I might start again one day

I read on a forum somewhere that you're a true bushwalker when you have a drawer for your jocks, one for your socks and another one for your bushwalking socks and jocks.

Guilty!

So where does that put you when you only have one drawer of socks, but they're all bushwalking socks?

Bringing this back to the top as I just made a major decision to downsize and concentrate on another passion.
So over the next while I think I will be selling off and paying forward a bit of gear. As Cecile doesn't camp and cannot bushwalk I don't need all the gear I have. And with the pandemic and the foreseeable long term ban on international travel I can't ever see me getting to the Far North and joining my mate for that Arctic trek.
Some good gear will be for sale soon, some reasonable gear but heavier gear to give to somebody starting out.

Good thinking MD. Things change, and we need to adapt. :D

The virus motivated travel changes will mean that the window of opportunity for the older bods amongst us will very likely not reopen before we run out of steam, so a plan B, such as yours, makes good sense..

On the upside, you may still be able to get to the Far North at some unpredictable future time, but likely the hardcore trek will not happen. C'est la vie. :D

Have you chosen the other passion yet?

During lockdown I took up abstract acrylic painting, having not done any art in the 45 years since high school, and I found it satisfying and compelling.

Very enjoyable read.

There are worse addictions,surely?!

Sounds like a re organising of gear is definitely in order Moondog. I did the same during the past year, everything must have a clear purpose and regularly see use.

How wonderful to have found a new interest as well.

Music reproduction I try and build speakers. A hobby almost as expensive as bushwalking
And Hi-Fi a very expensive passion but not at my end, I'm more medium-Fi

My house
Snap...me too. Are there any other sort of socks?

Mind you since covid 19 rocked our worlds I have changed my tune gear wise... previously I could minimise anything but my hiking gear, in this last year the hiking gear has also been pruned. I even resisted buying that Double Rainbow Li that a member advertised here yesterday! So unlike me. On the plus side I can now find the key stuff I need without ploughing through what I don't need or use. My other reason for minimising is my fitness and ability have diminished (back problems) so I just can't carry as much as I used to. Anyway every time Dan the Man announces another lockdown I go into another decluttering spree. So satisfying!
