I work in a hospital emergency department. This snake season here in SE SA/SW Vic has been absolutely insane. In the last few years I have seen *maybe* one genuine bite with envenomation each season and normally it is a 20 something male who has been trying to kill/taunt/catch the snake. This season I have seen almost one per week and a couple have just been people out in their backyard bringing in the washing or something. Most of these people have been fine after a couple of days of treatment but we did have one fairly serious one who took about 2 weeks to be discharged. All tiger snakes by the way - for some reason they have been very aggressive down here lately. Be careful out there.

Peppermint, thank you very much for the warning. Gaiters essential would be my thinking.

Peppermint, thanks. Long gaiters and not playing with the snakes are indicated. Always give wild animals a way to escape.

He says he feels like a fool for not being better prepared with a first aid kit, as he had also been bitten by a brown snake in 2021.

Probably an Eastern Brown snake, Tuesday 18, middle of day.
Me, I think he was lying in the sun digesting his lunch.
We tiptoed past, and other than lifting his head a little, he ignored us.
Cheers
Roger
