Resurrecting this thread given a great deal of Australia is locked down again.

My immediate plans- touch base with NPWS on Monday. I have annual leave coming up (planned walking trip scuttled obviously) but luckily my LGA encompasses a great deal of Barrington Tops NP. I am hoping day walks permissable as a local.
I am also doing the Couch-2-5km app again as my fitness has taken a dive since 2019, 2020 saw me go from half marathon fit to a bit chubbo.
If lockdown ends in regional areas in NSW, walk the Tops to Myall Heritage trail in a single push. I have walked it in sections this year. It is local and achievable in the current climate.

Longer plans post lockdown- Larapinta June 2022, Possibly Bibbulmun 2022 as well, I will have long service leave and my 'big' 40th Bday French walking plans were Covid-ed in 2020, so I feel I want to do something significant. Although perhaps aiming for NSW based adventures may be wiser as I really want to be able to achieve some of my plans. Regional ?BNT sections as a pushybike ride or walk.

Given that, for me, 'this' is not CoVID lockdown but a lack of transport due to the vehicle requiring major surgery - just about anywhere that isn't here. Possibly takayna, weather permitting.

I had Larapinta all but booked in for the lockdowns end but I’m starting to reconsider it. Looks like half of Australia will be on that track when the walls come down. Maybe somewhere a little more quiet...haven’t done any Vicco high country? Hmmmm????

be happy if i can get anywhere beyond Auckland.... they are still testing a big backlog of people to find out how many infections are here that they first discovered on tuesday from someone who had no connection to anyone coming through the border. 50 and counting so far...

With only 45% of Australians having the first jab I can't see us making 80% fully vaccinated by Christmas this year. My Big Bash Birthday Party may get cancelled yet again

Supposed to be walking Jatbula next month but looking unlikely for various reasons, travel restrictions and otherwise.

Other options - would like to head back to SA and maybe see a wee bit more of the Heysen, but that’s not looking promising either.

If I’m able to go anywhere I might go and do the GOW. I guess I’m not committed to any particular dates now, so if a window of opportunity opens I’ll have my pack ready.

We might all be very much older before this is all sorted out.
The Spanish Flu lasted for years.
Zimmer-friendly tracks?

The Overland track Early Dec. 2022?

Hiking up Brock's road to the King Billies this summer, returning via Cairn Creek track. Scouting out the route for a XC BC ski trip in 2022.

Did you hear about the couple who threw a dart at a map on the wall to see where they would go after all this is over? Apparently they will be holidaying behind the fridge.

I used to think exotic locations like Larapinta or Iceland. Now I'm just thinking about spending a week or two exploring around the Southern Blue Mountains. This year is out so maybe April or May next year all going well.

Also subject to major vehicle surgery… or replacement. I got T-boned yesterday by someone who thought it was a good idea to drive through a red light  :o

No major injuries to me or the Jack Russell thank goodness but I have a very sore arm/wrist/hand and a bit of a stiff neck. Hopefully won’t affect pack carrying.

Yes! I am much the same, went from my epic French walking trip that was cancelled to more local thoughts. Although still thinking about Larapinta, not with any great gusto. Spending 7-8 days walking Tops to Myall on my doorstep would be freaking fantastic and so far out of what I am legally able to do at the moment. I can plan that trip with some enthusiasm though as it is much more likely to occur.

NNW- I hope your vehicle pulls through okay and that it has adequate analgesia while it recuperates.

Eremophila- Scary! Glad Jack Russel and you are okay. Maybe your car could share a hospital ward with NNW's?

I hope they have insurance and that the fuzz throw the book at them. Endangering people's lives is not a minor offence.
Also hope there are no long-term complications for you. Whiplash haunts you forevermore.

Thanks. Feels like minor soft tissue stuff, but I already have major neck issues. I’m worried about long term implications. I’ll be lodging a TAC claim immediately to protect myself.

She will definitely be charged. As for the insurance- my insurer can worry about that.

Based on the discussion on another thread, I’m heading to the Murray Sunset Walk.
Assuming I can travel outside Melbourne but have to stay within Vic.

Makes a slight change from the tropical island that I’m supposed to be going to!

How much bigger the world will seem after so many being restricted to small areas. I can't imagine how much tougher your restrictions are than my own, hang in there.

I read that thread too and added it to my freedom to-do list.... there's only three walks on there and I am really hopeful to get to at least one of them in October.

Won't regret it. Somewhere between Mt MacDonald and the Razor/Viking would be picking the eyes out of it. Have to get back there

GOW is always a good walk.

Given you’re in SW Vic, I assume you’ve done the GSWW?

Have done about half. It was my first multi-night walk. I often head to Cape Bridgewater for a day out, just beautiful.

Given my current (non) fitness levels the GOW will be a suitable outing.

I’m wondering if we’ll see any Melbourne escapees on the trail…..

So Ive been looking at my little map I have and I'm thinking something like this:

Speculation Rd to Camp Ck, Head East along the AAWT across Barry saddle until meeting the Wonnangatta track. Then veer South on the Zeka Rd until it goes West and meets the Mt Howitt CP Then North up through the crosscut saw.

It's a circuit? Haven't been in there before so not sure about how and where to drive into or if the tracks are even present on the ground...any advice on this proposed route?

When I first posted I never thought it would last this long or that the virus would be so deadly to those susceptible and that after 2 years or more we still don't have a fully vaccinated population.
I am almost at the point where I am beginning to forget what "normal" was.

Sorry just saw this. That's a nice circuit... but (IMO) better to skip Barry saddle and instead go off track (well there is a vague pad) down south Viking spur to the wonnangatta from the Viking, then up zeka track. Also don't follow zeka track all the way up, but turn off at a cairn about halfway up and follow zeka spur (again a vague pad) to meet the mt howitt track between the carpark and VG hut.

Lastly, speculation Rd is a decent access point, especially if coming from NSW, but not as pretty as coming from the upper howqua (also good if coming from NSW)... either up howqua feeder to howitt, Stanley's name to the crosscut or (my preference) helicopter spur then over magdala/hells window to howitt. The latter would turn the circuit into a lollipop (or even figure 8 if you went back to the howqua a different way).

Some of the best alpine walking on the mainland I reckon.

It's kind of the reverse for me. Just got back today from a few days down the SW, and it's lockdown for southern Tassie for the first time in nearly 18 months.
But when that's over the next item too be ticked off will depend on the weather.
