Visibility of mountains

Postby Lophophaps » Wed 15 Feb, 2023 11:22 am

Mountains can be seen from other mountains, but if there is high ground in between, the distant mountain may be out of sight. Also, even major peaks blend into the skyline or just below it. For example, Jagungal is visible from Tabletop not too far away to the north-east. As far as I'm aware, due to high ground between the two mountains Round Mountain is not visible from Tabletop. On a clear day in winter the Main Range can be seen from Mount Bogong, but Kosciuszko, Lee, Rams Heads are just bumps. Tate at the back may be hidden by the high ground from there to Rams Heads. Further, haze often obscures mountains. One evening camped on Bogong there was just a blur towards Kosciuszko, but at dawn the air was clear and Jagungal stood out, 120 kilometres away from memory.

Is there a way to determine if there's a line of sight from one peak to another?

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) applications such as QGIS and ArcGIS can produce view-shed and line-of-site outputs. However, you have to have good data (such as a DEM - digital elevation model) to put into them.

In Tasmania, there is a statewide 25m DEM available for free download. Not sure about other areas.

(25m is a very low resolution for a DEM, but it would probably be good enough for this.)

Oh, yeah, I forgot about Peak Finder (I've watched others use it but never got around to using it myself).

The point is that although Peak Finder works for your current location, but default, it can also be configured to work for any location you choose.

PS. I've just tried it, and Peak Finder doesn't list either Jagungal or Round Mountain in its view from Tabletop.

If you search for “Navigation Intervisibility” you’ll get lots of hits.

Commonly taught in military navigation (probably not naval :)).

Thanks. I am after something to show if a mountain can be seen from another mountain with an online app, desktop computer. That is, go to a website, add the mountains and see what comes up. None of the above seem to do this.
