Where to hike in September?

Postby elena » Mon 18 Aug, 2008 7:31 pm

Hi everyone,

We have booked a trip to Tassie for September 5th-9th. We fly into Hobart and would like to do some hiking for some (or all) of our trip. Initially we were thinking of doing a little of the Western Arthurs but now we are worried that conditions will be too poor? What do you think?

We are both fit and enjoy difficult hiking, but I am not experienced with snow.

Any suggestions for what would be a good ~3 day hike?

Thanks.

Mt Anne springs to mind immediately. Can be a great trip and if necessary (bad weather) then you can always pull back to Mt Field for a bit of alpine walking (also subject to weather). Maybe a quick trip to Hartz Mountrains.

Does it have to be in the mountains? There's a hike on the East Coast that follows along the coastline that might be good.

Agree with that for sure. If you enjoy hard walking its a very rewarding place to be, especially if there is snow (weather dependant of course).
I wouldnt count on getting to the summit of Anne at this time of year, unless you are experienced with ice.
have a look at the gallery if you are after some motivation!
that said, any trip in tassie will be rewarding, and i hope you like the place!

The best option is to go to the best weather part of the state and remain flexible. You can strike it lucky in the mountains in September, but at times it is pretty crook and lots of snow slows your progress considerably. You only have to look at the log books to see how many people turn back. The east coast is usually the pick for milder weather (Freycinet, Tasman NP and Douglas Apsley or maybe Mt William NP - far north east.
