Unless you're talking 1850
I just tried my hand at making an old style shirt.
Cecile recommended making a muslin for my first attempt so I got an old sheet from the Op-Shop for a dollar.
Very comfortable and great freedom of movement
Rookie mistake in that the sleeves are inside out. Took me a half a day
The next one will be better

I've spent a half a day unpicking and repairing.
Version two will be in a fabric almost twice the weight and strength. Versions 3 & 4 will be in cotton/linen blend and then I'll think about the pure linen version with the Viking weave pure linen that cost $40- a metre 10 years ago.
One of the linen blend fabrics coming is an interesting "fashion" print that is an almost perfect Tiger Stripe camouflage that was discounted to $19- a metre and I might get some funky pull-on summer pants out of whats left.
Anybody here do historical re-enactment and could help out with design queries??

Would anybody like the trial run shirt ?/
Needs the cuffs stitched but it might be a fun dress-up for one of you.
I'll be starting on the next couple if a few days using new fabric, mainly because new fabric is much easier to sew.
Maybe we could all meet up and dress like pirates at the Mt Gambier Renfair in April

Sew the cuffs inside-out to match the sleeves :P
