Very cool. I think it will do really well. Something to compete with the duplex and with the added benefit of Tarptents professionalism, quality and thoughtful designs.

Ooooooooo. Intriguing.

But I don't need another tent. Really, no.

The DR has been the best selling tent pretty much from the start , in 2006.
So why was it not the first of the DCF tents to come out ?
Well the problem with DCF is that it does not stretch so it seemed to be a lot safer to do the trekking pole tents that have mostly flat panels.
Anyway, last year Henry and Co at Nevada City had a go at making a prototype and somehow it looked right the first pass.
My forecast has been that this one will outsell all of the other TT DCF shelters , the design works and the finish is very good. (from pics, I don't have one...)

I got to see a Double Rainbow that a friend has. They found a DCF Zpacks wasn't durable enough, so changed to the DR.

As a dome tent it looked very narrow for head room. The sides of the inner tapered
steeply, compared to other domes I have and have seen. Is this the case in use?

The pre 2019 versions (2006-2018) are about 33% narrower in the middle than the current sinylon and Li .

Great Franco.
My dome has that third short pole that sticks the vestibules out a bit.

Are they going to do one with a solid inner? Because that would make it just about perfect.

The Double Rainbow is a single wall tent. It looks like the interior side walls are half solid though. I think you can get a liner for the ceiling but it’s starts getting fiddly and impracticable in my opinion.

I’ve gone off small single wall tents up here in the alps but in drier climes they are excellent.

How do those Easton CF poles hold up? Anyone used them?

I have a 2016 double rainbow and love it. Been thinking about a duplex. A DCF double rainbow would be fantastic, just concerned about CF poles durability wise?

Full spec now out on the TT website https://www.tarptent.com/product/double-rainbow-li/

Peterw you could go the Stratospire if you hike with 2 poles and not worry about the CF pole.
You can get the bombproof 3-4 season Stratospire Li @ 739g that requires 2 trekking poles and has more head room and packs down a bit better.
Or the 3 season Double Rainbow Li @ ~810g that requires no trekking poles and has more floor space.

Decisions, decisions, well not for me as I'm not in the market for a 2 person tent but both are around the same weight as my Protrail and look at all that extra space! Nah, I'll wait for the new Aeon Li to come out even though that extra space is tempting.

The above mentioned liner can be installed and left attached so after you spend two minutes clipping it on the job is done.

Crollsurf,
The new Aeon should land in Nevada City mid/late May.
The prototype looks nice. (WP zipper for the fly door)
Just curious : do you prefer the design of the Aeon over the ProTrail or is just the weight ?

Has anything else been updated for 2020 on the Aeon, Franco?

Side entry is a better option for sure. The Protrail I really like because of it's simplicity (not much to go wrong) and is there a quicker easier tent to setup and tear down? Especially when windy or raining. Ventilation is also great with the Protrail but don't own the Aeon to compare. Also a bit of nostalgia, as it was my first UL Tent. Headroom could be better in the Protrail but sagging is it's only weakness and a DCF version would fix that.

Aeon wins on design but simplicity still makes the Protrail very attractive. I suspect TT has no interest in a Protrail Li. It would have to be a bit lighter and pack down smaller before I would consider buying a DCF Protrail over the Aeon.

I know for sure that you are not the only one that would consider a ProTrail Li, after all that type of shelter was the one that started TT.

Going by the Rainbow Li .. a protrail Li would be 502 grams and ~$AUD 740. Aprox 0.82 grams per $ difference between normal and LI.

this looks interesting.
One day I too will spend a fortune on these DCF tents so I could have something superlight for summer months. In the winter, i think classic double walled tent would be the best.

Question franko - would someone 1.90 with a thick pad and fluffy bag fit into this tent or single rainbow for that matter without touching the walls? (currently using moondance1)

BTW, the same is true for 1 person inside the DR or DR Li if the mat is in the middle.

Good looking design. Not sure how many $.

In this CV19 age, maybe we should all be trying to emulate it with MYO contructions!

Nuts put together a great ...no...”amazing” looking DCF tent years ago - I’m not sure how it went with longer term use, but, given that many now have time to sew, and tink with things, maybe more MYO?

It’s a nice idea but some of us don’t have the space, time or inclination to get in to MYOG. It’s not a small outlay buying the material for a DCF shelter either.

I'm looking at a small tent construction. The difference in price from poly to DCG and weight loss ~ 100 grams and +$300...

I would go with sil poly. The cost benefit of DCF is not there for me.

Yeah, DCF is very expensive in the quantity needed to make a tent or 2 person tarp. I'm thinking about making a Camo DCF tarp but the cost savings are minimal compared to an off the shelf one.

Because of the labour content , making a tent with DCF could result with greater savings but because it is difficult to work with it could also mean making two or more to get it right .
But some have succeded.

This is currently on my short list right next to Zpacks Altaplex...weight difference is quite big...price not so much although with the AUD as it is its going to be a big investment nonetheless.

So...do we know if Tarptent delivers to Australia?

I had an Altaplex for a couple of years and used it quite extensively. They are ok shelters. When I moved to the Tarptent Notch Li I never looked back. Night and day difference in design and quality. Henry at Tarptent tent and the rest of the team have always been amazing with their customer service. I wish I could say the same about Zpacks...

The Altaplex suffers quite a few design issues IMO and while the DR Li is a little heavier, it doesn't need as many stakes, walking pole and pole jack to erect it.
