Road condition and water

Postby ktjarrah » Tue 15 Dec, 2015 9:52 am

Hey hey.
Planning a food drop on boxing day near rumffs.
Any ideas of road conditions?
Also, any water updates would be greatly appreciated- I talked to parks omeo and they said things are looking good, but would love any extra input.

Cheers

Hi there

The Jamieson-Licola road is a good 2 wheel drive unsealed road. It is of course gravelly and windy. Mind you, in the three weeks between my two visits in November, there was some clear deterioration (new small potholes). The Middle Ridge Road side road to Rumpff Saddle is also in very good condition (with one very short section of roughness).

Water was good the whole way from Mt Hotham to Thredbo in late November/early December, and you shouldn't have problems with commonly used watersources from Thredbo to Tharwa. The potential problems are Rumpffs Saddle to Mt Hotham, and I have given my thoughts in the post above. Very happy to talk further on the phone or by private message.

Much better to drive into Rumpff from Middle Ridge Road off the Jamison Licola Road to do the drop unless you are keen on carrying a newly heavy pack down a very steep track... like we did. Very do-able but less fun. Water wise there was none in the creek near the higher campsite next to the Nobbs as of a couple of weeks ago.

Also small amount of water not on map but flowing across track heading north out of Low Saddle again about two weeks ago. Water wise we had some interesting (read long and painful) side trips for water through that area. If you can access Low Saddle via Mt Sunday Rd as some walkers we met did would be a great place for a food and water drop.
