How to Embed Images from other Sites in Forum Posts

Bushwalking pictures.
Forum rules
Please keep the width of embedded images (using [img] [/img] tags) in this forum to no more than 800 pixels wide (this will avoid them being clipped without notice by most users' window sizes). Attached images can be any resolution so long as the file size is no more than 1 MB (attachments will be displayed by the forums as thumbnails no larger than 800 pixels linked to the full-size image).

Please include a description of the pictures' content so that readers know what they're all about.

For topics focussed on narrative rather than the photos, please consider posting in one of the 'Trip Report' forums instead.

How to Embed Images from other Sites in Forum Posts

The simple instructions for including images are in the BBCode FAQ available by clicking the 'BBCode' link next to the text box when composing a new message (under the 'Options' heading), or click this link: BBCode FAQ.

The short version of those instructions is:
  • Upload your image file to a web server somewhere and note the uploaded image file's URL. NB: This is the URL of the image itself (ending in something like ".jpeg", ".tiff", ".png", etc), NOT the URL of a web page that includes the image.
  • In the text of your new forum post, reference this file in the format: [img]URL[/img]
(replacing 'URL' with the actual internet URL of your image file).
Including images from some image web hosting services is not so easy, as some of them require you to use special URLs to do so, and others may not allow their images to be embedded in external pages at all.

For Flickr you can use the URLs generated by Linkr (dead link - may no longer be available?).
Open a flickr image, such as http://www.flickr.com/photos/inspiratio ... 144863752/
Right-click on the image. A popup menu appears. Right-click on the size you want to link (pref. 640 pixels), and "Open in new tab".
Looks like this - http://www.flickr.com/photos/inspiratio ... 144863752/
Finally, right-click on that image and "Copy image URL".
Paste that link address inside the IMG tags within the forum. The said link for the example used looks like this - http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6058/6351 ... 2076_z.jpg

Please post in this topic if you have any other tips for posting images hosted on other web sites, particularly for images from other such photo sharing services.

NB: There are forum rules governing posting of images including a 800 pixel size limit even in this Gallery forum. Please familiarise yourself with all the rules before posting: FORUM RULES.

Note that copyright laws mean that you should have permission from the owner of a picture before using in this way.

MORE ON FLICKR...

I don't use Flickr but having a quick look, it appears to me that using Flickr images in the forums should be quite simple without using Linkr. Just go to the Flickr image you want to use (eg, AFTER clicking on the thumbnail), then view the image alone in your browser (how to do this depends on your browser), eg, right click -> 'View Image'.

You should end up with a web page with nothing at all, except for the image. The URL should end in '.jpg'. You can then copy this URL to use between the [img][/img] tags here in the forums. Eg: [img]http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1382/1482239079_3fecd7874e.jpg[/img]

Note that you can remove the 'farm2.' from the URL (which is what Linkr does) and it still works fine.

NB: If you wish to embed your Flickr images manually like this, you will also need to link to Flickr if you wish to abide by Flickr's rules. It may be easier to just use Linkr instead.

EDIT by Tasadam.
I updated Flickr instructions in the post above.

Uploading lessons and how I did it using Picassa

Postby frank_in_oz » Fri 20 Jun, 2008 9:12 am

Hopefully this post will help anyone who is trying to upload a picture from Picassa.

I discovered today that all (most of) "My Hiking Blog" photos are actually hosted on Picasa , even though I use Blogger as the platform for the blog.

I will try and explain this in "simple" steps.

1) Upload your picture to http://picasa.google.com/

2) Open the picture in your Picasa web album

3) In the "Link to this photo section " find the heading saying "HTML to embed in website".

4) Select the size you want the photo to appear on the forum. There are 4 options from thumbnail to 800px (which is the size limit for the Bushwalk Tasmania forum)

5) Copy the computer code on the section below the "HTML to embed in website"

The code created for one of my pictures was:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/frankinoz2/OurHikingBlog/photo? uthkey=l2lua44Mgi0#5024999553870581330"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/frankinoz2/RbxieHzzzlI/AAAAAAAAAAM/oM2G8XyP6v8/s800/IMG_0030.JPG" /></a>

Just embeding this in the forum WON'T WORK.

6) Open Bushwalk Tasmania forum in a new window and create the post where you want the picture to appear.

7) Click on the "Img" icon in the forum post section to add the correct "tags"

8 ) Paste the HTML code from Picasa between [img]HERE[/img]

9) Find the highlighted bit of the HTML code:

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/frankinoz2/OurHikingBlog/photo? uthkey=l2lua44Mgi0#5024999553870581330"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/frankinoz2/RbxieHzzzlI/AAAAAAAAAAM/oM2G8XyP6v8/s800/IMG_0030.JPG" /></a>
AND DELETE IT.

10) You want the HTML Code that is between the tags to be like this:

http ://lh4.ggpht.com/frankinoz2/RbxieHzzzlI/AAAAAAAAAAM/oM2G8XyP6v8/s800/IMG_0030.JPG

NB: I have added a space between http and : so the code does not look like a link

11) Your final "string of code" should look like this. NB - this time, just to confuse everyone, I have had to add a SPACE in [img ] and [ /img] so that the text appears - REMOVE THE SPACES so they are like this:

[img ]http://lh4.ggpht.com/frankinoz2/RbxieHzzzlI/AAAAAAAAAAM/oM2G8XyP6v8/s800/IMG_0030.JPG[ /img]

12) In the code you will notice a part that says: /s800/ . This is the SIZE the picture will be displayed on the forum.
I have added a couple of different sizes below. First is 800, second 400 and third 200. All I had to do was change the number in the "string" of code to the size you want. (Remember 800 is the maximum for this forum)

Again, with spaces in the tags so we can see the code:

[img ]http://lh4.ggpht.com/frankinoz2/RbxieHzzzlI/AAAAAAAAAAM/oM2G8XyP6v8/s800/IMG_0030.JPG[ /img]

[img ]http://lh4.ggpht.com/frankinoz2/RbxieHzzzlI/AAAAAAAAAAM/oM2G8XyP6v8/s400/IMG_0030.JPG[ /img]

[img ]http://lh4.ggpht.com/frankinoz2/RbxieHzzzlI/AAAAAAAAAAM/oM2G8XyP6v8/s200/IMG_0030.JPG[ /img]

ALTERNATE METHOD

1) Open Picture in Picasa web album

2) Right click on picture and select "Properties"

3) Where it says "address" (URL) copy the code:
NB - space added between http and : so the code displays - make sure you don't have a space

http ://lh6.ggpht.com/frankinoz2/RdmCPxAVEVI/AAAAAAAAAA8/eFuUGiXlHoE/IMG_0061_comp.JPG?imgmax=512

4) Remove all text to the right of .JPG - in this case ?imgmax=512

5)You will then have something like this: http ://lh6.ggpht.com/frankinoz2/RdmCPxAVEVI/AAAAAAAAAA8/eFuUGiXlHoE/IMG_0061_comp.JPG

6) Add the RED BIT to define the size of the picture

http ://lh6.ggpht.com/frankinoz2/RdmCPxAVEVI/AAAAAAAAAA8/eFuUGiXlHoE/s400/IMG_0061_comp.JPG

Make sure you add the Img tags and, in this case I have removed the space after http preview. You should see your picture

How to post more than one photo?

Postby kanangra » Tue 29 Oct, 2013 3:28 pm

I think I've finally got the knack of posting photos. I just don't know how to post more than one in the same post? I can't seem to get the attachment button to come back after the first?

Best to use an image hosting service for your photos eg. Photobucket.com. Then use the img tags in your post like the way shown below. On Photobucket's web site, you'll be able to copy the URL location of your chosen photos, copy and paste follows.
Code: Select all
[img]http://www.photobucket.com/photo1.jpg[/img]
[img]http://www.photobucket.com/photo2.jpg[/img]
Just move it!

Photobucket is a web site, just like this forum. They specialises in hosting digital photos and can be shared directly to others or as links on web forums. Click the following link and you'll see.
http://www.photobucket.com/

It's far easier to see than instruct by text when you are not familiar with some of the basics. Try this Youtube video.

Yes, the 'upload attatchment' button should be available after you have uploaded the first one, sure it's not just being pushed down off the page?
you should be able to just keep uploading separately and then place them in line (I think it's 5 images per post). This is probably the easiest option to begin with.
