Bushwalk Tasmania 5th Anniversary Walk - Any Takers?

Postby Son of a Beach » Mon 20 Feb, 2012 7:17 am

This website is nearly 5 years old, which means it's time to start thinking about an anniversary walk again. Last year's walk was very poorly attended, so I wanted to get some idea of interest in people joining an anniversary walk this year.

It would likely be on the 24th and 25th of March (optionally walking in on the Friday 23rd beforehand for those who could get time off, or don't mind walking late in the day).

I'm open to suggestions for locations. My first suggestion would be at Oakleigh View hut (ie, Pelion Hut), where people could walk in using the Arm River track. There are several mountains and other walks that can be done from this point (as well as a couple of other ways to walk in/out for people interested in doing circuits or through-walks).

Please let me know if you might be interested in joining an anniversary walk on these dates. If there is not enough interest, I will probably not organise anything further.

Sounds like an opportunity! I would be interested, that weekend or later, earlier is out though. My only caveats are that I am not a mountain goat so provided the walk in is not ladder material (tarn shelf was a doddle) I will make it OK. And a Friday departure might be possible.

Just a reminder of a couple of points, IF we end up using this location:
  • Bring a tent! The hut is large, but is well used at this time of year, and if we are a large group, it would be best to leave as much room as possible for OT walkers. There's one large tent pad, and lots of grassy area just west of the hut (camping to the east of the hut is no longer permitted).
  • There are several ways to get to Oakleigh View (Pelion) Hut. The Arm River Track is the shortest of the more well-known tracks, and takes 3 to 4 hours for most people.
  • This will not be an official bushwalk.com event. If it goes ahead, I will post a topic to the "Find Walking Companions" forum inviting forum members to join me for the walk.

The Arm River Track is not hard. It's moderately steep for about 45 minutes, I think (from vague memory), and the rest is undulating or flat. Each person can take it at their own pace, and choose whether or not they want to do any mountain walks from Pelion or not (eg, Oakleigh, Ossa, Pelion East - or some others that are more difficult or further away). Apart from Oakleigh, which can be done on the way in, or on the way out (a 3 or 4 hour detour), the others would probably require walking in on the Friday, doing a mountain day walk on the Saturday, and then walking out on the Sunday (for most people).

Of course everyone that comes on the walk would be doing so independently and may or may not walk with others on the way in and/or on the way out, and may or may not walk to any of the day walks from there with or without others. So the idea is that hopefully we'll all spend some time together at camp, and some may collaborate on their walks in/out or daywalks. So you can make it as easy or as hard as you like, with the bare minimum being simply walking in and out on the Arm River Track (or one of the other routes).

OK, there seems to be enough interest (and I know that some of the usual takers are currently away on a walk), so I've put up the announcement topic in the "Find Walking Companions" forum here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9055. I'll lock this topic, but please continue discussion in the new topic, now that the walk is confirmed.
