Hey all,
Just curious... How many of you out there are abelists? (i.e. have climbed all of the abels).
There are a lot, and some of them are quite difficult to get to, so wondering whether anybody has managed to complete the full list!

I'm aware of only one person who has walked up them all.

For most peak baggers it's a secondary list. It helps that almost all of them are on the most recent PBL I guess. Personally I think they all should be, I mean 1100m+ with a 150m drop or whatever it is is a pretty decent mountain by Tas standards.
TBH due to only having 1/3 the number of peaks I guess it should be technically a little easier to complete.

I think I've done a bit over half of them?

Maybe 2?

Paulpeakbagger would be one (what hasn't he done?!), who's the other?
Tue 08 May, 2012 9:07 am
The other is probably Phil Dawson?
As Dave Noble has commented in the past, even tho it is a a list of fairly prominent mountains, it also misses some of the best mountains in the state (Franklands, POW's, North & South Geryon + many, many fine peaks in the SW).
The Connoisseurs Peak Bagging list is a much better selection of fine Tasmanian Peaks & Mountains

(biased opinion here).

If 3 people have completed the peak baggers list and a few more getting very close, then surely more than 2 people have completed the abels.

Yer but they only found the one near the Eldons recently didn't they? I think Phil Dawson was behind it's discovery? I don't think Dave Harris would have gone out there yet.

I think we could see the horrible green mound from the top of Manfred at Easter. It looks rather uninviting I can tell you.

Yes, Dave Harris hasn't been there & Paul hasn't either yet as far as I know.
So yes, maybe Phil Dawson is the only person to have completed them all?

I'm a fan of the Connoiseurs list, there's plenty there to keep you busy for years and it cuts out the crap from the peak bagging list and covers about half the Abels too. When I've finished that I may look at the Abels and then the peak bagging list.
. And that scrubby lump looked very uninteresting from High Dome!!
Tue 08 May, 2012 1:26 pm
When was this other one discovered?
TBH, I've never actually seen any of the peakbagger's lists, the Abels is the only list I've really seen! Having only done 8 or so of them so far, there's plenty there to keep me going for quite some time

I'm not sure whether or not I'm surprised by the fact that there aren't more people who've done them all, as it seems to be a fairly popular list, but I guess there really are a lot of them!
Thanks for the info guys, always interesting to hear opinions/chat on here!

'Tramontane' ?? Something like that was only identified a cpl of years ago. All the details are in the books
http://www.theabels.dreamhosters.com/ they're a good read with very valuable information.
Can't remember how many I've 'bagged' 50 or 60 maybe....but it's a fun thing for those of us with OCD

Pretty sure two people have completed them, maybe a couple more that have been in the few Trampontane parties. I don't think Paul's done Trampontane.
I almost think they should have capped it at 1000m instead of 1100m, that way you'd get Greystone, Diamond Peak, at least one in the Franks and a lot of crap. Can't say I aim to climb peaks because they're an Abel, I will if they're on the PB list or close by anyway though.
As previously mentioned the Connoiseurs list is great.

Who's the second Marco? I think it's only one.

Basically a list of the 125 best peaks in Tasmania compiled by Stu, MJD and Paulpeakbagger. It cuts out the rubbish out of the peakbagging list basically and it is still a very difficult list to complete with many peaks taking or a weeks to bag. But it is a much more feasible list to complete. There is a link somewhere on this site to the list

Thanks Doogs

just found
this which may be of some interest to you norts. (it's the conoisseur's lists, if you didn't guess

)

There is an list of them here
http://tastracks.webs.com/peakbaggers.htm including the excellent spread sheet by MJD that includes all the lists in one easy to use reference.
MJD - A great piece of work that.

Ah, so it was Tramontane. It was the newest one I knew of (I own both the abels book, but thanks for the links!), but wasn't sure if it was
another new one.

Yep, Phil Dawson is the only one to have climbed them all.
Its surprising to the non-peakbagger how many lists there are to complete. The Abels is probably the best known due to the books but is just as arbitrary as any other list in terms of how it defines its subject.

Its all a bit of fun.
I think most keen walkers and even the occasional walker has a tick list of their own...Ossa, Cradle etc.
