Belt Weight and Pack Weight.

Postby John Sheridan » Mon 02 Jul, 2012 12:44 am

Trying to figure out if belt weight should be factored in as pack weight, I mean you carry all the weight with your legs !!!!

I am going to add to my belt a 1 litre canteen water bottle, and my emergency kit, also Knife,Saw,Mini Axe which I might only take one, depends on the condition and if I want to do any bush craft, Oh also will be taking a bum bag with my camera and gear in it on my belt, or around my waist with it's own belt, but will be modding that with clips or something to remove the belt.

Cheers.

If it's something you are carrying because you are hiking - count it in.

Of course! The vast majority of my pack weight is carried by the hip belt and I count it, so another belt is really no different is it? Or is this how ultra lighters manage 5kg pack weights

So THAT"S how they do it!!

I agree with the others, with one minor qualification. While indeed we are carrying all the weight one way or another, I find that near the upper limit of what i can carry, i find it very much easier if I've got some of the weight (water, camera, munchies) in my waistbag rather than on my back. Maybe partly a balance thing, but it feels more than that.

Failing that, you could always put it in your pack.
How do you do up your pack hip belt with a load of ... stuff dangling round your middle?
Every four seconds, somewhere in the world, an Harlequin Mills and Boon is sold ... Wot ...

Its dangling everywhere, left, right, back, front, I see, to manage to do the hip belt up fine, maybe it's just the pack and the hip belt is in the right place needed :)

I do see the benefit of hanging stuff on the belt, less back strain ect, I think weight directly to the legs makes it easier to carry, as your legs are the strongest part of your body to take the weight.

Cheers.

A properly adjusted pack will do this anyway.
