First Exam in 20 Years

Tomorrow I'm going to sit my first exam in about 20 years. Such fun!

My wife and oldest daughter have my revision notes and have been quizzing me randomly.

Last night at dinner time my daughter (6yo) wrote a note and passed it to me. It simply read, "Landsat 30 m".

She knows a lot more about satellites than I did at her age!

I have my 41st (and hopefully last ever!) uni exam next Tuesday. Internals are good, I have 8 days to study and can get a faculty pass should I fail - but I still dread walking into that exam room...

I well remember leaving uni after my last exam. I was so grateful that it was all over. Such a good feeling.

I vowed that I would never do it again, I hated uni so much.

But here I am, breaking that vow. Still, it's much better when part time and when studying for a reason other than "dunno wot else to do".

Best of luck Nik (and strider). I can totally sympathise. As someone who vowed once she finished her masters to never study again...Im of course looking to do another masters in the next year or two. Just shoot me now

Went back to study this year myself after near enough to a 30 year break and yes its been a big shock to the system. But it has been enjoyable and other than going through a few extra biro's, a bottle or two of wine and a carton of chocolate for stress relief, I have managed to remain reasonably sane, or at least no less sane than I was before.
So good luck to everyone sitting exams.

I still after many years occasionally wake up in a cold sweat thinking that I have an examine and have not studied for it. It is the five minutes or so seating at a desk staring at the back of the examine that I dread the most but once it is turned over the die is cast so adrenalin kicks in. Always dread "easy" examines as this can mean that you had no idea what is required.

Anyway best of luck and I am sure that you will ace it, especially if you do not think you have at the time.

Yes, Frenchy, Remote Sensing it is. It finally dawned on me that GIS sits right in the middle of one my interests/hobbies (maps and managing spatial data) and my current profession (IT). So I thought I'd best learn something about it in case there's an opportunity to make a career out of it. Imagine doing something you enjoyed for a living. That would be novel.

I'm not really worried about the exam, but I'm sure I'll be a little more apprehensive when the time comes tomorrow morning.

I actually did some studying this time around. Didn't do much of that as an undergrad.

Yup stuck in the middle of exams for me too, my last one, before I returned to study last year, was about 15 years ago!! Luckily I have 1 exam still to sit this semester which is called 'Earth, Climate and Life' it is very enjoyable to study as it fits right in there with my interests I had to write an essay on the Glaciation of Mount Field earlier in the semester so I had to go down and have a closer look for research
A couple of my friends were studying GIS in Launceston this semester, both keen walkers but not members of the forum.

I think it all went OK yesterday. I'll find out in about 4 weeks, apparently.

Now my arm and hand hurts. I'm not used to writing that much with a pen!

I hope it all went well Nik. My fourth and last Uni course was 2002 - though I seriously considered starting a new one in 2011 (I think I have the inclination but not the passion). But now, I would find it almost impossible to sit a three hour written exam. My last three hour written exam I really struggled with cramping. I could type for three hours no worries, but I'd be lucky to write for an hour without cramping up. Which begs the question why can't one sit a typed exam or a spoken exam? Why pen and paper in the 21st century?

I did a 3 hour exam a few weeks ago and totally lost the plot during it - concentrated way too hard on getting small thing exactly right and ran out of time. Not an enjoyable experience, but partly due to being sick the day before so no study and still not well during the exam. Fortunately I passed, and with the results from the rest of the (tax) course managed to scrape a high enough mark to be offered a job.
