Alternative to Carlon Head - Getting back to Bushwalkers Hil

Mon 12 Aug, 2013 7:57 pm

Hi all,

I am planning a trip in the Blue Mountains, which will require a return to the top of Bushwalkers Hill from the west (i.e. from Carlon Head). However, is there an alternative to Carlon Head as it sounds pretty dangerous these days to climb it. The maps show a small gap in the cliff face just North East of Carlon Head where Galong Creek is.

Does anyone know if there is an alternative to Carlon Head?

Many thanks,

Daniel

Carlon Head can be quite intimidating ( more so if you are scared of heights). Any reason why you can't go up Mt Debert then Taros? or does it need to be closer to the Firetower?

I agree with KB. Carlon's chains calls for a good head for heights.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the quick replies. I am planning to do a loop from Bushwalkers Hill, head along Mt Debert, Kennel Flats, to Mt Dingo then return by Blackhorse Ridge and then need to find a way back up to Bushwalkers Hill without doing Carlon Head. I want to do a loop without repeating the route by backtracking my way along Mt Debert.

What do you guys think about Tarros Ladder? Is that easier to climb down?

Cheers,

Daniel

Taros Ladder is to 90% of people a very easy option, unless you have an extreme fear of heights or it can be a bit "tricky" if you have a very large heavy pack. The alternate is to just take the Wallaby Track route. If you are heading up to Taros from Little Cedar Gap ( Powerlines) then the track follows the cliff around to the right side instead of climbing Taros which is on the left side of the cliffline. It adds only 10 mins to your trip.
Did you check the link I provided last night ?- it has most of the options for accessing the firetrail on NN.

You'll be going down Tarros to get to Mt Debert in the first place. There's a bit of exposure, but it is possible to walk around it via a gully to the north (sometimes known as Wallaby Track or (incorrectly?) Duncans Pass).

Dunphys Pass and Harmil Ledge are both less exposed than Carlon Head, but neither is easy to find if you haven't done them before.
