Hi Robbie. Welcome to the forum. I am heading to the Grampians next weekend. Can't answer your question though. Perhaps post the question in the 'Victoria' forum. You might get a few more Victorians reading it who may be able to help you out.

There are currently plans underway for a multiday walk from Mt. Zero to Dunkeld utilising some existing tracks and forming some new ones. This will probably still be some years away as many existing tracks are still being worked on after the floods from a few years back and recent fires have closed others. There is just not enough money in the kitty to get the work done that is needed.
If your talking off track, others have tried and failed on many occasions. Off track in the Gramps can be painfully slow, the pain is from the hakea scratching you to pieces, not sure if this was the kind of walking you were after or not?

I don't quite see the point of this North to South track, the Grampians aren't a single narrow range, there are many things to explore both East and West as well, a circuit would have been more appropriate, or just adding a couple more overnight walks. Not to mention that they'll use countless 4WD tracks as walking tracks, which is a certainly cheap but rubbish habit. Nobody likes walking one a wide 4WD track that isn't made for scenic exploration (Werribee Gorge, Lerderderg or the Mallee NPs come to mind).

The plans for the 'new' walk would see about 30% on new tracks and 70% on existing ones. The planned route is designed to maximise interest and enjoyment, which is the main reason why it will walked from north to south. The planning also provides for a number of circuit and/or feeder tracks and walks so that it will be possible to do shorter sections as well as the entire walk, unlike the Great Ocean Walk. As far as the money for the proposed development is concerned, it isn't being funded by Parks Vic who have little money anyway (or as a staffer said to me last year, Parks Vic doesn't have any money, and even if it did they don't have enough people to do much new anyway).
