What is this about?

Bushwalking NSW is the peak body representing the interests of bushwalkers and their clubs. This is the official public forum for the organisation and a great place to share ideas, help out and discuss concerns.

What is this about?

Postby bushwalkingnsw » Tue 06 May, 2014 11:04 am

With the cooperation of bushwalk.com, Bushwalking NSW has set up this forum as a place where issues facing bushwalkers in NSW can be raised and discussed. This is not intended to detract from the general NSW forum, but is targeted at issues where Bushwalking NSW can be involved or take a position on behalf of NSW bushwalkers.

From time to time, Bushwalking NSW will post and ask for feedback or assistance from the large pool of knowledge available here.

Equally, if you have an issue that you think needs to be taken up with the NSW government, raise it here and we will see what we can do.

Bushwalking NSW Inc is the peak body representing bushwalkers in NSW. It currently represents around 9000 bushwalkers in clubs across the state, and provides a number of services to those people and clubs. It is the NSW representative in Bushwalking Australia. It also supports the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Service (http://bwrs.org.au), a specialist member of the Voluntary Rescue Association (VRA), whose focus is wilderness rescue situations.

And just so that people know, Bushwalking NSW Inc is the new name of the Confederation of Bushwalking Clubs of NSW.

It is not related to my website, Bushwalking NSW, which has been running under that name since 2002.

I have started to receive emails from people trying to contact the Confed!

Maybe Bushwalking NSW Inc could be referred to in shortened way, like it was in the past. BNSW perhaps?

Hahaha Thanks for your enthusiasm. This is only the first of a number of initiatives by BNSW Inc that you will see over the coming months. But I cannot say any more for now......

And who am I? I am otherwise known as davidmorr on bushwalk.com, but am also a member of the Management Committee of BNSW Inc. As time goes by, I imagine other members of BNSW Inc will post here too.

I agree. BNSW is already a well used name in the community and media, it's not sensible to be another BNSW. A basic branding consideration or it'll run into the exact problem as what they have done with you. Except this time BNSW proper is a far bigger and better recognised organisation.

I was kind of joking about the abbreviation. There's little point in abbreviating as you lose the key item about which you're trying to brand yourself. BNSW = Baseball NSW? Bicycle NSW? Bushwalking NSW?

I chose Bushwalking NSW as my website name 12 years ago for probably the same reasons as the Confed did last year (or whenever it was). It's the most succinct way of saying what you're about. It's just a bit unfortunate now that there are two.

If I plug bushwalking nsw into Google, I get #1, Wildwalks gets #2 and #3, and the Confed gets #4...

(and for bushwalk nsw, Wildwalks gets #1/#2, I get #3 and the Confed gets #10)

I would suggest to the Confed that they modify the title of their website from "Bushwalking NSW Web Site" to "Bushwalking NSW Inc - <insert a few key words describing what they do>" since that gets used (and shown) by search engines. And also put a meaningful meta name="description" tag, since search engines will often use this as your site summary (eg for mine, "Bushwalking NSW provides practical information on bushwalking around Sydney and NSW - national parks, track notes, walk reports, sketch maps, book reviews and links.")

Coincidence! As I was typing the new topic here about photos for the web site, a message came in about your posting.

As you can see, we are working on a new website. This will certainly address the issues you mention.
