Thanks for that extensive reply, it's very helpful to to hear the conclusions other people have come to. When looking at spending a reasonable amount of money and expecting to use the equipment for a long time once purchased, it's nice to try to get it right!

On the topic of Macpac Microlight - what would be the recommended max user height for this tent (based on the length more so than the height)? It would be great to hear from other taller walkers with experience with this tent (and from blacksheep as well of course!)

I had decided on getting the Akto, but have looked for somewhere that sells it that doesn't ask an arm and a leg for it. It's price is making the Microlight look more and more attractive. Does anyone know where I could buy an Akto for a reasonable price?

I can't help much here Luke- I've not used one! I'm 6'4, and while I can lay down in one okay I haven't field experience with this tent- embarassing but true...

G'day Luke,
I own and use an older model and recommend a water resitant shell sleeping bag and suspect that anyone over 190cm may need to bend their legs a tad

Having used the oldschool version quite a bit (same internal dimensions as new one), I can say that as a fairly (but not freakishly) lanky guy, at 6'3 I feel pretty well cramped in one. To be honest, doing anything in the tent, thanks to the degree of sag that occurs on the upper part of the sloped side, is kind of like trying to do origami with a poster in a phone-booth, its VERY cramped.

My mate who has one of the new ones, is closer to 5'7 or so tall, and he said his was fine, not cramped at all, so I'd say that to be honest to not feel cramped I'd recommend it more for those a little shorter than 6'3.

Just my 2c.

Lol - good description. I'm just a smidgen under 6 foot and things aren't much better - it's good for flexibility though At half the price of an Akto I can handle it I think.

After finally deciding to bite the bullet and buy the Hilleberg Akto, I was very kindly alerted to the Vango 100 being sold cheaply at The Backpackers' Barn sale (thanks Adam), so at $235 and 1100g I thought it was just too good to pass up. I suspect that it isn't as good as the Microlight or the Akto but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. There is one left if anyone is interested. Now I just need to find a sleeping bag and pack so I can test the tent out!

What level sleeping bag are you looking for, what kinda pack, what sorta money?

Nuts,
They have 4 synthetic sleeping bags left, and a few packs that don't fit me. I want a good down bag - something like a Mont Zeal I think, and a pack that fits me, is fairly light but it would need to be 65l as I don't have a walking partner so have to carry everything I need. Money depends on how good the pack is, if it's perfect I'm happy to spend more.
