"Exploring the Jagungal Wilderness"

Thu 31 Dec, 2015 12:56 pm

On the NSW site I have posted details about a new guidebook, by the above name, for Kosciuszko National Park. The relevance of that discussion to Victoria, and the reason for this post, is that from experience I know that many of the bushwalkers who walk in Kosciuszko National Park are Victorians. In fact KNP may well be more visited by Victorians than New South Welshmen.

Now that the book has been published as an ebook on Amazon and Apple and has been released as a physical book, I am looking for suggestions from Victorians as to the retail shops in Melbourne and elsewhere which best cater to Victorian bushwalkers. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

In the meantime inquiries can be sent directly to me at [email protected]

The essence of the book and the history behind it follows.

“The 2003 fires in Kosciuszko National Park, destroyed 23 huts and did enormous environmental damage. But they had some beneficial side effects. By clearing the undergrowth they revealed things which had been hidden or forgotten.
This book tells of the hut ruins, graves and other features which were found; and also the old dray tracks and bridle trails which were traced and recorded.
A real revelation was that the bridle trails and dray tracks, which had been used by graziers and miners for over 100 years, were very sensible routes, which are just as useful for bushwalkers today as they were to the old-timers then.

Klaus Hueneke, author of “Huts of the High Country” and “Kiandra to Kosciusko” described it as "The most detailed coverage of track and hut sites in the Jagungal Wilderness ever compiled.”

Contact the bushwalking gear stores in Little Bourke Street in the city, there are quite a few stores there, eg. Bogong Equipment. Also, the Melbourne Map Centre carries some walking guides for all areas of Australia.

The main purpose of writing the book was to encourage bushwalkers and Scouts to make the most of their time in Kosciuszko National Park. Some of the best walks are off the beaten track so the book is full of old maps which show you where to go as well as the GPS positions which will get you there.

The NSW site contains comments from some of those who have already received copies.

I have already offered a number of NSW bushwalking clubs a free copy of the book which they can show their members. That offer is extended to affiliated Victorian bushwalking clubs, which have previously walked in the Park. Club secretaries are invited to contact me at [email protected]

One of the sites which is off the beaten track and not even shown on the current Jagungal map is Bluff Tarn (pictured below). Details of how to get to it and other sites are included in the book.
