Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan) Topo maps

Postby backyard_botanist » Mon 07 Nov, 2016 7:55 pm

Planning a trek from east to west coast of Indonesian borneo (Kalimantan) but am having problems finding any descent topo maps. Anyone had any luck finding descent maps for this area or other areas of Indonesia?

Cheers,

You could ask http://sandakanspirit.com/
They do the Sandakan death march. They have Australian guides.
I walk, shuffle then hobble.

I think you will struggle to get accurate contour maps of Indonesia - they tend to be a little paranoid about invasion.

I have a 1:2 million map of Kalimantan and a 1:800,000 map of KalBar showing kampung, roads etc.

What sort of 'trek' are you planning? something like Eric Hansen?

I lived and worked in Pontianak for a couple of years and travelled inland a few times as far as Sintang.

The best I ended up with were old world war 2 maps, which have big blank spots and admit to being inaccurate in the more rugged country.

Even on OSM, there’s precious little entry apart from known roads.
Just move it!

The Trek was great, just to experience the equatorial Jungle, wildlife was difficult to see as the area is pretty heavily hunted by the local Dayaks. Our route took us from upstream of Long Apari across the foothills of the Mueller Mountains out onto the Bongan River, was supposed to be a 7 day hike but we cut it a day short as my mate got crook.
