Hi all,
As the title says, I'm after campsite options along the Lyell Hwy within say 15-30mins drive of the Frenchmans Cap car park.
A bunch of us are planning a day-run and want to be within a stone's throw of the trailhead the day before to allow for an early start at first light. Sleeping in our cars at the car park itself is the fallback option, but not preferred.
The Collingwood River bridge site is only a few mins up the road; great memories of camping here as a kid, but last time we passed through four years ago the main camp area on the western side had been ripped up and 'rehabilitated', leaving only the small area on the eastern side where rafters start their Franklin River trips. I'm assuming this is still the case.
Any other options worth considering. Doesn't need to be flash, have toilets etc. Just room for a few cars, a couple of tents, and ideally water and a pleasant view for some quiet NYE drinks before an early night's sleep.
Cheers, Ben.

The old scanned maps on ListMap show there are two possible options.
1) At the car park itself
2) At the Loddon River.
http://maps.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/app/list/mapNot sure if they're still there though.

Why not by the Franklin Rv just down from the car park? Already on the track, a few places to pitch in there, plenty of water, nice outlook.....

Cheers everyone for the suggestions, and apologies for not replying soon - been crazy over the Xmas period (surprise, surprise!).
Ended up stopping at the Franklin River Picnic Area - lovely spot for the evening. Saw an echidna swimming across the Surprise and Franklin Rivers, which was a first for me!
