Out came the GPS when we couldn't find any cairns..
It's scary how easily that can happen!
Had a similar thing on Mt Thetis a few months ago. We got to the top in clag and wandered along the rim to find the descent point on the western side but couldn't seem to find it. Looked on the GPS to realise we had been scouting along the eastern rim. Somewhere along the way we got spun around and did not realize. My body compass could have sworn it was on the western side.
