Follow-up on this: last week walked the old track from 625015E 5923318N in SSW direction to peak 859. There is a good little turnout on the BW for parking, but no evidence at all of a trailhead from the road itself. A few steps over a graded embankment and you will soon find the old track. No evidence of any use in recent years. Easy to follow about 2/3 of the way to the peak, then just hoof pads through the scrub up the spur. Beaut views from the peak, esp if you wander down the east side a bit. Wilderness. Rather steep going up - but not as steep as the NMT which I went up and down the next day! Didn't venture further south from the peak (towards the border) but I reckon it would be slow going. Also no water on the ridge and spurs, of course.
