I'm just thinking aloud here. "Nicks Pass". The only "Nicks Pass" I know of is the one that leads to Thousand Man Cave, which is in a much drier area where there are no stone steps.
Your photo has a strong Blue Mountains feel, with all that water dripping. And if you told me those steps were built by the same team that built Furber Steps, I could believe it.
There's a set of unprotected steps at the bottom of the Old Point Pilcher Track, with lots of water around, but it's a while since I've been there and I can't remember what the bottom of it looks like. Anyway, Grand Canyon is hardly "quite a long way from Govetts".
Maybe we're on the other side of the highway. Perhaps it's one of the old unmaintained tracks south of Leura: Lindeman Pass, Gladstone Pass, etc.
Abandoned steps in a wet place with a big cliff to their left ... I'm struggling here.
