If you want to walk this route then now is the time. The track has been cut and tagged/ marked from Guy's hut to about 7 kms along from Guy's hut before the steep final descent to the Dry river track and its junction with the Bicentennial National trail( The Dry River horse track ). Some clearing has been completed along the river flats.
The overgrown final section has been tagged with pink ribbon. There is talk of possibly combining Parks Vic. , BTAC and the Horsey people to get the walking track works completed and cutting and clearing the horse track . If this were to occur then a sort of a loop could be walked in the Dry river area between the Howitt Plains and Dry river/ Wonnangatta Valley.

I would love to. I've got a short list I want to do, Prom. Northern circuit, Helicopter Spur/Howitt and Viking/Speculation.
Unfortunately, broken foot has meant Labor day long weekend is a wash.
Maybe I can do something Easter holidays if foot recovers and I get a bit of fitness in the legs.
Which is to say, tracks like this are way back on the queue. And if you're right about another lockdown, I think bushwalking will be a bust this year, like last year. :(

Still...I can follow your adventures and exploits. :)

The Dry river hike is a category 4 wilderness trek.
You need to be confident at remote navigation and self reliant in every department.
Top level fitness is not optional either.
It is very remote and wild. You will NOT see anyone else out there unless you bump into a deer hunter near Dry river.

OK, you've convinced me. Not going to do this walk as I can't see myself being up to it. :)

I think BTAC may have returned recently and recut and tagged the rest of the route from Guy's hut to Dry river and the Wonnangatta River. Call PV at Heyfield for clarification. In good weather it is a solid adventure!.

Did this in reverse a couple of years ago as part of the Viking circuit with a stop at WS. Chose dry river track over the 4wd riddled Zeka Spur Track, preferring the solitude of single track. The only part that was a real issue was the section approaching the river once the 4wd track petered out. There was no real discernable track or pad for a couple of kms. Once at the river, there's a few big logs at a bend with the track heading up the spur easily spotted. GPS defintely came in handy, though you could spot the spur and use it for reference coming in toward it. Going in the opposite direction, you'd have no reference point. It's a great track though!

AFAIK The Dry River track should be much easier to follow all the way from Guy's hut to the Dry river or the reverse route. It is now a track clearing and marking job that has been completed.
