Tawonga Huts is a long drive from Melbourne, somewhat exposed, a short distance, not much climbing, and a hut where you can hide from bad weather. Jaithmathang can be climbed, and if you are comfortable with a short off track foray, you can keep the altitude on the way in to the saddle west of the huts, then going down to the huts.

Erica car park is closer to Melbourne, the walking is sheltered all the way, StPhillack is a longer distance (although camp can be made earlier), there's a lot more climbing (it should be okay) and there's no hut.

On balance I like Erica car park to the StPhillack region. The distance and climbing can be managed by taking breaks, and the rocks should be fun. Depending on what time you start, camp should be reached by noon-2 pm. Despite any gripes at the time, providing the challenge is not too much, later he will relish the achievement.

I'd avoid both areas if the forecast is bad. Wet cold weather will not be enjoyable for a first walk.

Where is the best place to park for an overnighter near Pretty Valley pondage?
There seems to a carpark and toilet just past the Hut and before the pretty valley track on the way to the pondage, and possibly another next to the pondage.

There is a car park next to the PV ponadage. It is down the hill from the PV hut. It is not far from the causeway which takes you across the pondage over to the intentions book on the start/end of The Fainters Fire trail. It is an easy day on foot from PV to Young's SEC hut. From there you can get to Ryder's hut and camp there and then walk out on day three via Cope Saddle hut back to PV.
That makes a nice loop all connected by pole lines.
You can get out to Salt camp creek from PV via Tawonga Huts and bush camp in the stand of snow gums just up the rise from the water at Salt Camp Creek . From there access to The Fainters is easy but you will need to walk cross country to reach the summits since the Fainters Fire trail passes below the two summits.
Avoid the Fainters in poor weather!

Thanks Mr. T!
In the end, for various reasons, I didn't end up going.
Was planning on taking the 11yr old for an easy re-introduction to overnighters, instead of dragging him up some spur - which seemed to put him off it a bit.
With the new job, road closures for Ski season, etc, it'll probably have to wait for spring now.

We still have some sunny days without snow left in Autumn. The Baw Baw Village to Mt. Whitelaw hut ruins trip is an easy overnight walk that is closer to Melb. .
