Frenchmans Cap track closure

Postby L_Cham_67 » Sun 14 Aug, 2022 4:52 pm

This happened a week or so ago, but i don't think it's been mentioned on this forum yet. Seems like Frenchmans is indefinitely off limits (unless you're coming via Irenabyss?). I can confirm that it is still closed as of today.

Also, surely they could have found a photo of the actual suspension bridge over the Franklin instead of the Loddon River bridge

It was mentioned at the bottom of another thread (https://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 04#p435323) but good to have its own topic I reckon! Makes this place feel a little more vibrant, happening and responsive. :D

I guess there's no update?

I was wondering why the whole track is closed though - if you can pack raft across somehow? (Thinking about later months, assuming it's still closed)

All I've heard is that some of that the fallen tree has been cleared. Someone sent me a photo of the bridge and it's currently tilted at quite a significant angle.

This was how I still crossed it in 1970.

. . . . and most recently earlier in 2022.

This photo of the flying fox was taken by LWC member Lindsay Crawford in 1950. The landing area and anchorage looks quite different to my 1970 photo, and again to the area where the current suspension bridge is located. Does anyone know if the crossing point has been in different locations over the years? When the flying fox was in use it may have moved several times according to where the most suitable anchor trees were located.

Frenchmans Cap Walking Track Re-opening

Frenchmans Cap walking track will re-open to walkers on Saturday 17 September.

The track was closed on 4 August due to a tree that had fallen and caused significant damage to the suspension bridge over the Franklin River rendering it unsafe for walkers.

Repair work has proceeded well and will be completed next week.

We thank walkers for their understanding around this closure.

Now they just need to remove the alert on the Frenchmans Cap page - maybe its set to disappear on the 17th?
