Who to walk with?

Sun 31 Oct, 2010 1:37 pm

Hi, I'm fairly new to the Hobart area and I'm keen to get out and do some hiking. I've found a couple of local hiking groups on the internet, but they both seem a bit formal (one more so than the other), and rather large although I'm not sure how many actually turn up to the walks on average. I'd rather go on a couple of walks and see what they're about before joining, but it seems they don't let people do that :?

I was hoping someone could recommend a group or any informal gatherings of hikers? I've taken myself off on a few short hikes, but it's so much better to find people who know the area well. I've done quite a lot of hiking before (mainly day hikes), and I'm used to quite an informal setup where the route is adapted along the way, and the odd bit of scrambling is thrown in for good measure. Any suggetsions welcome!

There is a Find Walking Companions section in this forum. It seems to work quite well.

They are a dangerous sounding crew to get mixed up in though! Can't forget the trip where they were up to their elbows in snow..... or the time they took over Scott Kilvett Hut....
