SEVERE TC YASI IS A LARGE AND VERY POWERFUL TROPICAL CYCLONE AND POSES AN
EXTREMELY SERIOUS THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY WITHIN THE WARNING AREA,
ESPECIALLY BETWEEN CAIRNS AND TOWNSVILLE.

THIS IMPACT IS LIKELY TO BE MORE LIFE THREATENING THAN ANY EXPERIENCED DURING
RECENT GENERATIONS.

We've been discussing this at work this morning. Absolutely frightening. I have a (now elderly) aunt who survived through Cyclone Tracy by strapping herself onto a bathroom doorjam while everything disintegrated around her. Her account of that night was terrifying. I don't know how this compares but best wishes to all in QLD who may be affected.

What must it be like in the eye of a cyclone, where the wind gusts go from over 185kph to zero!

Either that or their equipment got blown away like it did for Tracy in '74. But it's still measuring rain, temp, pressure, PRESSURE! OMG, look at that, 938! Imagine seeing that on your barometer!

Looks like the radar has packed it in / been blown away as well. Pity, it was looking really interesting.

My dad was as sea for 30years and he really enjoyed being in the eye of a cyclone. He always used to walk out on the deck of the ship as it was when they would turn it around to face the winds as it changes to the other direction. He said it was amazing to look through these gnarly clouds to see the stars above.

And to think with climate change occuring, even larger and more frequent cyclones of this magnitude will hit Queensland...things are going to get nasty.
