Getting started
From the Munyang (Guthega Power Station) car park, this walk heads along the short driveway and across the large bridge over the Snowy River, heading towards the power station. At the fence (on the other side of the bridge), this walk turns left to head around to the other side of the power station. Just past the concrete building, this walk passes the two large feeder pipes and continues, soon finding an intersection with two management trails marked with a 'Schlink Trail' sign.....

	Start heading along Guthega Powerstation Road. After another 20 m cross the bridge (about 40 m long) There is a toilet (about 70 m back from the start)., not equiped with Handwashing basin. There is a car park (about 25 m back from the start). After 135 m find the "Guthega Power Station (Munyang)" (25 m on your right). Guthega Power Station (Munyang) This was the first power station of the Snow Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme, completed in 1955. It is also known as Munyang, as the station sits just west of the confluence of the Munyang and Snowy Rivers. The station boasts two 30MW turbine and generator combinations, providing peak power to the eastern states. The turbines are powered from the water in two large pipes that form part of the Guthega Pressure Tunnel, fed by Guthega Dam. The dam is about 260m higher than the power station.
	The starting point of an alternate route. Alternate route via Disappointment Spur To take the alternate route continue straight here. Details below. After another 7 m continue straight. Keep left. After another 140 m head through/around the gate.
	The starting point of an optional sidetrip. An optional side trip to Gate House. To start this optional side trip continue straight here. On returning from this side trip turn sharp left when you get back to this intersection. Details below. After another 2.2 km continue straight, to head along Schlink Pass Road. After another 890 m cross the ford.
	The starting point of an optional sidetrip. An optional side trip to Horse Camp Hut. To start this optional side trip turn left here. On returning from this side trip error >360 when you get back to this intersection. Details below. After another 470 m continue straight, to head along Schlink Pass Road. After another 920 m cross the bridge (about 55 m long)
	The alternate route finishes here. Continue straight to rejoin the main route at the 6.8 km waypoint. Details below. After another 2 km (at the intersection of Disappointment Spur Trail & Schlink Pass Road) continue straight, to head along Schlink Pass Road. After another 160 m continue straight, to head along Schlink Pass Road.
	After another 640 m (at the intersection of Schlink Pass Road & Horse Camp Aquaduct Trail) continue straight, to head along Schlink Pass Road.
	The starting point of an optional sidetrip. An optional side trip to White's River Hut. To start this optional side trip veer left here. On returning from this side trip error >360 when you get back to this intersection. Details below. After another 410 m continue straight, to head along Schlink Pass Road.
	After another 3.1 km turn left.
	Continue another 30 m to find the end. Then turn around here and retrace the main route for 11.1 km to get back to the start. About 15 m past the end is a toilet. About 15 m past the end is "Schlink Hilton". About 15 m past the end is "Schlink Hut". Schlink Hut This is a large Snowy Mountain Scheme hut built in 1961. The hut sits between the maintenance road and a set of high tension power lines which run along the valley. The hut was built to house the staff who were building and maintaining the infrastructure in the area. Today, part of the hut is left unlocked for public use. There is a pump-out toilet, flat grassy area and creek nearby for water. The hut has several rooms, beds, a fire place and a table. The hut is named after Sir Herbert Henry Schlink (1883-1962), a medical doctor and xc skier. Dr Schlink made the first winter crossing from Kiandra to Kosciusko. The hut is often called the Schlink Hilton, due to its size.

	After another 160 m veer left. After another 190 m find the "Gate House" (30 m on your left). Gate House The gate house is a large concrete building, built into the side of the hill about 220m above Guthega Power Station. This building joins the underground Guthega pressure tunnel with the long white pipe that feed the power station. The gate house regulates the flow of water from the dam to the power station. There is some limited shelter and a great view along the pipe down to Munyang.
	After another 120 m come to the end. Turn around and retrace your steps back the 470 m to the main route.

An optional side trip to Horse Camp Hut.

	At the intersection of Horse Camp Hut Access & Schlink Pass Road Start heading along Horse Camp Hut Access (a vehicle track). After another 510 m come to "Horse Camp Hut". Horse Camp Hut

Horse Camp Hut is found beside a trail linking the old Munyang-Geehi Rd with an aqueduct trail on the western side of the valley. The smaller room contains bunk beds and a stove and the larger room has a fire place, table and sitting area. The hut has a timber floor and the outer walls and roof are made of corrugated iron. There is a creek nearby for water and a pit toilet is available. The grassy flat area around the hut makes for great camping.

	After another 40 m come to the end. About 25 m past the end is "Whites River Hut". W:www.kac.org.au About 25 m past the end is "White's River Hut". White's River Hut At this site, there are a few buildings - the main hut is believed to have been built in by Bill Napthali and Fred Clarke in 1935 to house them as they grazed cattle. It is also possible that the hut was built by Edward Haslingdon and his sons in 1933. The Kosciusko Alpine Club has a long history with the hut and has made many changes over the years - they are now the primary caretakers. This hut has two main rooms plus an entry woodpile annex. The second hut is behind the main hut - the SMA hut (aka the Kelvinator). This second hut is not as well maintained as the main one. There is also a pit toilet beside the hut. A large, flat, grassy area makes a great place to camp and the nearby creek is a source of water. NOTE: On 27th July 2010 an accidental fire has done significant damage to this hut, it is now fenced off and accessing the hut is unsafe. A plan is likley to be put into place to restore the hut. About 35 m past the end is a toilet., not equiped with Handwashing basin. Turn around and retrace your steps back the 240 m to the main route.

Alternate route via Disappointment Spur

	After another 230 m continue straight, to head along Disappointment Spur Trail. After another 115 m find the "Disappointment Spur Hut" (15 m on your left). Disappointment Spur Hut Disappointment Spur Hut was built in the 1950's out of two standard accommodation modules, to support workers on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The hut is in a small clearing on the side of Disappointment Spur Trail (aka Aqueduct track). There is a supply of water from the nearby aqueduct and a flat area for camping (no toilet). The hut is made from weatherboard with a flat tin roof, has a timber floor and three windows. There is a bunk bed and a table inside, and a fire circle outside.
	After another 315 m continue straight, to head along Disappointment Spur Trail. After another 180 m continue straight, to head along Disappointment Spur Trail.
	After another 750 m veer left, to head along Disappointment Spur Trail.
	After another 210 m continue straight, to head along Disappointment Spur Trail. After another 255 m continue straight, to head along Disappointment Spur Trail.
	After another 1.1 km come to the end. At the end of this alternate route, rejoin the main route.

Covered in snow part of the year
This walk leads through an extreme alpine environment and all walkers must be well prepared. During summer, be prepared for both very hot and cold weather, high winds, rain, snow, extreme UV levels and some sections of snow or ice on the ground. Before starting this walk, check advice with Snowy Region Visitor Information Centre (02) 6450 5600, the weather forecast and the snow conditions then change your plans as needed. These notes, grades and walking times have been written for use in the summer months only. Between May and the end of October, this walk is likely to be covered in snow/ice, visitors should be carrying and be prepared to use snowshoes or cross country skis. When there is a chance of significant snow on the ground, visitors will need particularly strong navigation and snowcraft skills - tracks and signage may not be visible. For most visitors, it is best to consider this walk closed during the colder months.

Guthega Power Station (Munyang)

  Other planned events: Notice of ongoing 1080 winter fox baiting program
  NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing winter ground baiting program from Monday 15 July 2024 to Sunday 15 September 2024. The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of feral foxes.
  The program will take place in areas of Kosciuszko National Park including:

  Dead horse gap
  
  Munyang
  
  The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species.
  Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

  Closed areas: Transmission Track closed due to post-bushfire damage
  The Transmission Track, Talbingo is closed due to post-bushfire damage. The track is closed and is not suitable for vehicle access due to erosion issues.

  Closed areas: Rawson Pass toilet closed for winter
  Rawson Pass toilet will be closed from Friday 3 May 2024 to the end of winter. Seamans Hut toilet will remain open all winter.

  Safety alerts: Guthega Road - changed speed limit due to road works
  The speed limit on Guthega Road has been reduced to 60km for the entirety of the road. This is due to road works taking place from 8 April to 31 October 2024, and an increase in heavy and light vehicle movements.
  Please abide by all traffic control signage and observe all directions from NPWS staff and contractors.
  Your destination is still accessible. To assist in planning your journey safely, please allow extra time in your travel plans and drive to conditions.

  Closed areas: Thredbo Valley track closure
  The entire Thredbo Valley Track from Thredbo Village to Gaden Trout Hatchery is closed to all cyclists from 5th of June 2024 to the 7th of October 2024.
  Maintenance works are underway between Thredbo Resort and Ngarigo Campground. As such, this section is closed to all visitors.
  Walkers are still permitted on the track from Ngarigo Campground to Gaden Trout Hatchery.

  Closed areas: Winter Road Closures For Kosciuszko National Park
  Some roads and trails in this park are closed to public vehicle use for the winter period. The closed road and trail areas are:

  KNP5 - Khancoban to Cabramurra Road - CLOSED
  
  Kings Cross Road, between Mt Selwyn and Cabramurra - CLOSED

  Chains must be carried in Kosciuszko National Park in winter (4WDs exempt).
  All motorists should be prepared and equipped for sudden changes in road and weather conditions in Alpine areas.

  The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be undertaking essential fire trail maintenance works on Merambego Trail, throughout April, May and June 2024. The trail will be closed to visitors.

  Closed areas: Sections of Kosciuszko National Park closed for feral animal control
  The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting aerial shooting operations in Kosciuszko National Park (KNP). Horses, deer, pigs and other feral animals will be targeted. The operations require the closure of the area of KNP north of the Snowy Mountains Highway and east of the Goobarragandra Powerline Road to the KNP boundary between Thursday 4 April 2024 and Friday 4 October 2024 inclusive (this includes the usual winter closure period from 10 June to 4 October, 2024).
  All tracks, trails, campgrounds, huts, picnic areas and accommodation nodes within the closure area will be closed during this period, including:

  A baiting program using meat baits and canid pest ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison will be conducted from Friday 22 March 2024 until Sunday 22 September 2024 in Kosciuszko National Park.
  The program will be conducted in the northern precinct of the park, which includes the following areas:

  Big Talbingo/ Buddong
  
  Entry into baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.
  Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

  Other planned events: Notice of ongoing 1080 baiting program
  NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing ground baiting program from 1st May 2024 to 1st November 2024 . The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of feral animals including wild dogs and foxes.
  The program will take place in Kosciuszko National Park and Clarkes Hill, Bogandyera and Jingellic Nature Reserves.
  The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.
  Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location.   The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program will be continuous and ongoing between Friday 9 February 2024 and Friday 9 August 2024. These programs are part of an integrated pest animal control strategy, aimed at minimising the impacts of these animals on neighbouring stock.
  Baiting programs will be conducted in Thredbo/Ingebyra, Dalgety/Paupong and Corrowong/Tombong/Merriangaah Wild Dog Plan Areas. Baiting programs will also be undertaken in Paupong, Merriangaah and Quidong Nature Reserves.

  Safety alerts: Powerline out of service in Jagungal Wilderness Area
  Happy Jacks Plain and sections of the Jagungal Wilderness Area are affected by powerline damage. The 11kva powerline that runs through these areas was damaged during the 2019/2020 fires with burnt poles and downed powerlines. It is out of service and will be removed from the park. Please keep a safe distance from any broken wires on the ground and broken stay wires from power poles.

  Closed areas: Tantangara Reservoir partial closure
  Some parts of Tantangara Reservoir will be closed intermittently until further notice for Snowy 2.0 construction activities involving controlled blasts. Full exclusion zones will be established prior to and during blast operations. The closed areas are:
  
  Areas of Tantangara Reservoir adjacent to the Snowy 2.0 construction site.
  
  Tantangara Reservoir boat ramp, adjacent to the Tantangara Dam wall.

  Closed areas: Closed areas due to Snowy 2.0 works
  The following areas are closed due to the Snowy 2.0 works from Monday 25 February 2019 until early 2027, unless the closure is extended or removed:

  Wallace Creek lookout
  
  Lobs Hole Ravine campground

  Other planned events: Ongoing increased traffic and roadworks
  There is an increase in heavy and light vehicle movements on the Snowy Mountains Highway (between Cooma to Tumut) and Link and Tantangara Roads within Kosciuszko National Park. This traffic will continue for a number of years and involves the use of specialised heavy vehicle combinations for transporting materials associated with the Snowy 2.0 project and other projects in the region.
  There will also be ongoing maintenance and upgrades to roads in the area as part of the project, particularly along Link and Tantangara Roads.
