Mt Anne Xmas 2008

Postby DonQx » Mon 29 Dec, 2008 10:32 am

Came back from Mt Anne & surrounds yesterday. Very nice it was.

A few pics below, mostly taken by Susanne.

This was a walking club trip, trip notice said things like:
24/12 nite - 28/12 Xmas Eve Escape & Mt Anne (yet another attempt)
1:100K Wedge & Old River, 1:25K Anne & Scotts
Susanne & I would like to have another go at Mt Anne as our Xmas escape. Ideally we'd like to do the circuit, but weather and group will determine the details. Trip pace cruisy. Philosophising, contemplation & photography encouraged. Reasonable fitness, sense of adventure, humour and 4 seasons gear required. Trip philosophy at http://www.ahack.org. We'll leave after work on Wed 24/12 and camp at Mt Field National Park camp ground from ~7.00pm onwards. Join us at camp either Wed nite or Thurs 9.00am for the start of the trip. Return to Hobart Sun 28/12 4.00 pm latest.

Draft trip report:
5 went. A most pleasant Xmas Eve at Mt Field NP camp ground was followed by 4 days of near perfect weather for the Mt Anne circuit. In our ususal fashion we didn't quite do things according to plan. 2 different camp spots between Mt Eliza and Mt Anne were enjoyed, one of them in a smallish cirque that even sported a mini glacier happily dripping away. 2 went to the top of Mt Anne. The next day 3 got as far as Mt Lot on their mission to do 'Lot's wife as a day trip', while 2 cruised around the plateau and avoided loss of composure attacks induced by boulders and steep mountain sides. Many nice pics were taken.

Beautiful photos. Such an amazing place. I was planning on doing Anne as a day trip on Boxing day but got pulled in by the christmas sales.. I need more will power!! My photos of my last Mt Anne trip in July show what your second camp and the glacier looked like a few months back!! Great in both conditions i think.

I think we passed some of your group on Boxing Day - we did the circuit in 2 days, camping at the Lonely Tarns.
Such awesome weather on the Boxing Day, only slightly less so on the next day; overcast but perfect walking conditions.
The last time I was through the circuit it was horizontal rain & zero visibility - such a nice change to actually see the magnificence of the area.
I think Lake Picone / Lonely Tarns area would now be pretty high on my favourite camp spots list (the list is very long :D) -
Mt. Lot is awesome from that side.
Thanks for sharing your photos, looks like you all had a great trip :D

Thanks for sharing these, they are fantastic photos with great composition and clarity...well done Susanna...I think. Really disappointed to have missed this walk with superb company as always. What I'd like to know is who got to the top?

Catch you on the next one hopefully

Hello Annette,

ahhh ... you've joined the forum ... excellent ... welcome!

would be luvly to be on a walk with you again ... 'tis been a while

most of the pics by Suse

Jill & Anna went to the top, Pam's been several times before, Suse & me spent most of the time cruising around the Eliza Plateau.

J,A & P also went to the top of Mt Lot, but didn't quite make it as far as Lot's Wife. J reckons she came back with a new perspective on the fragility & preciousness of human life. Maybe coz A is a climber and took them places you'd normally not consider?
