Bizarre how the Tasmania comp gets so many more voters than the others, are people really that parochial???

Well there ya go, that prtty much answers my question..... doesn't explain the lesser voting numbers for landscape and non-landscape, or do they need to have Tasmania in their titles?

I don't know about "so many more." This month it's a lot as a percentage - around 50% more for Tas - but last month it was only about 4%. What might be surprising is how few people vote. Last month the winners were decided by about 25 voters. Maybe a lot of forum members don't realise they can vote at all. Or are there other reasons for the low participation?

Personally, I happily admit I'm a mainlander and always have been though Tasmania is, by me, touted as the best tourist state in Australia.
However, I have to agree at how sadly parochial it is when it's a PHOTO competition and people ignore all the entries, however wonderful they may be, simply because they live in a certain area.
It's not, after all, a Tasmanian competiton and I thought we were all bushwalkers/nature lovers on this site and would naturally be interested in photos of same. Shows how wrong one can be....
Cheers all.

It's wonderful of you to judge people and they're actions without knowing them, credit to you.

But just for you i'll explain myself.... Although I enjoy it, im not really into PHOTOGRAPHY.... But I am very into my beautiful home state of Tasmania that I love with a passion. So I like looking at pics of Tas..... I have no interest in the mainland at all.

As for the last comment, there are what? 3000 members on this forum, and you think they are all going to be the same?? Have the same values and personalities??
This site was once Bushwalktas. I know it's now australian wide, international even, but for me it's still just about walking in Tasmania.

There are none so blind as them that will not see.

There are plenty of beautiful places in Australia outside of Tassie. But you're never going to know what they look like if you don't even look at the photos. You're missing out on a hell of a lot.
But that's your choice.

Wow talk about having your head in the sand so to speak, now don't get me wrong I love Tasmania and want to get back there next year but Australia as a whole is a amazing place with so many beautiful areas, let alone the world as a whole. Who would not want to walk the John Muir Trail for instance. While I can't change your ideas as everyone is different broading ones mind can open up so many more possablilities ;)

I'm a bit like ILUV in this respect. I know there's plenty of great places to walk, but I prefer my own back yard to that of others.

I enjoy walking elsewhere when opportunities come up, but I don't go out of my way to look for them. I'm not sure why I feel this way. It may be something to do with feeling at home in the familiarity of my own back yard (even in parts of it I've never been to, there is still the feeling of familiarity with vegetation etc).

I've travelled elsewhere but always prefer Tasmania. Not necessarily because its 'better'. But it is better for me.

But I still want to see everywhere else. Photos at least, as there's not enough time to walk it all.

That McRae shot is a real cracker - exemplifies Tassie Wilderness.
However, the follow up discussion really just highlights why the competition is at a bit of a stasis or going backwards.
SoB - the real issue of ILUVs response is not which state takes ones fancy, but whether parochialism becomes the flavour of the site.
That will be a sure way to kill enthusiasm. Imagine how someone feels putting in the effort each month to try and get quality picks out on the track, just to be told "I couldn't give a fig about your photo".
Sure - people can think like that - but they should learn to be more circumspect before expressing it.
Do you want the site to live or die? That is the issue.
And if the answer is we want it to live and prosper, then lets encourage folk.
You know - maybe spare a moment to look at a few pics and make a selection.

Agreed. In fact I find that photos of elsewhere are sometimes even more interesting than photos of Tasmania - probably because of the lack of familiarity. Seeing places I'm less likely to visit in person, and landscapes vastly different to the places I know.

As much as Tasmania, as my back yard, is my preference for walking, I'm still intrigued by photos of foreign parts. They are literally an exotic wilderness to me and (for Eggs' sake :-) ) I've found the entries in all of the competitions to be just as worth browsing through.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. Interesting that only a few hours after this shot was taken it was snowing on us as we walked out.

Maybe all the voting waffle should be moved over to all the other threads on photo comp voting?
