Event jacket vs Gortex Paclite jacket

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Event jacket vs Gortex Paclite jacket

Postby Tony » Mon 14 Feb, 2011 7:49 pm

Last weekend my mate and I where doing a bit of bushwalking in some warm heavy rain, my mate was wearing a Gortex Paclite jacket and I was wearing my new Macpac Event Traverse jacket, we where both carrying around 10 kg packs.

After about three hours walking in the heavy rain over varied terrain we reached our destination which was an old cattleman hut somewhere in the KNP. When we took our jackets off, my mates Paclite jacket was very wet inside, in comparison my Event Traverse appeared to be completely dry inside and even though I was a bit sweaty from the walking I did not feel wet. The rain beaded beautifully on the jacket and the jacket did not get wet but I do realise that the jacket is still new.

This is the first time I have worn my Event Jacket in steady rain and I am very impressed by its breathing abilities, my mate is also impressed and he is now looking at getting an event jacket.

Event jacket vs Gortex Paclite jacket

I'll second that. I've recently purchased a macpac prophet and I'm loving it (especially since Sydneys summer is somewhat wetish but rather humid).

Thanks for your comment, I hope I get many years of use from my Macpac Traverse jacket.

I have just been reading about the new generation of water proof-breathable technologies, with products like Neoshell, Omni-dry, Pertex Shield DV and DryQ coming out soon, all claiming to be far better than current water proof-breathable materials including the current eVENT.

well you should know that pertex shield DV, and dry Q are actually event membrane, just sold under a different name!

Ahh! Use the same 'membrane', not the same fabric as 'eVent' .. So it is possible the different fabrics (and methods individual manufacturers use are better or worse, cheaper, dearer) ?

Event have changed their buisness model to making the laminate and allowing more freedom on what face fabric to laminate. Pertex is owned by a company called Mitsui that make textiles, so they laminate themselves. Dry Q is the house name of event used by mtn hardware, who are themselves owned bu Columbia sportswear. Columbia make ahbit of re labelling 3rd party brands as house brands as that gives them flexibility to change suppliers if needed etc.
better/worse? it is possible that one may use more/less glue in lamination, or a different DWR, but the "guts"is the same- eVent membrane

Ok some others (like Macpac) buy direct from the 'event factory' (and stay with the event name)?

yes. eVent, or more correctly, the owners GE, granted permission last year for companies to re-brand their product, as they found that the some customers had a preference to sell under their own brand names...I heard at last OR show that initailly Mtn Hardware where going to run dryQ and gore-tex together, but have now dumped goretex and only running dryQ/eVent rainwear as their premium range

I second all the positive comments for eVent. Have an Integral Designs eVent jacket - weights about 270g packs down to nothing and I've climbed mountains in warm rainy conditions and its breathed beautifully - even kept me dry... Compared to my older Goretex jacket which weighs about as much as my tent these days I'm a happy convert.

Longer Event jackets:
Men's Hollyford
Women's Hollyford

However, I got the Resolution because I found it long enough, and lighter. My wife is thinking of trading in her Copland for a Resolution after seeing how much better then Resolution performed in Tassie last month.
Come on lads, let's get home. The sky's beginning to bruise, night must fall, and we shall be forced to camp.

Yeah the Hollyford is as good as it gets. Still not knee length but longer than most (all?) other eVent jackets. Nice and solid too, unlike a lot of northern hemisphere coats.

Lets start a bi guys waling club!

I did note that montane have a new jacket coming out that is super light event jacket and if it was just longer! The zipperless Montane Spektr Smock, weighing just 7.4 ounces (210 g), is the lightest eVENT jacket available according to backpacking light.

I have a westcomb eVent jacket (made in canada).
It's epic light and is great for torrential rain and heavy winds!
pit zips are added bonus and plenty of room to layer underneath.

i believe it is superior to my other jacket which is a mountain hardwear goretex paclite.

the downside is it costs like 500 dollars, but i'd prefer to be dry.

Hi everyone,
I brought a Montane Superfly (Event) to use on our Western Arthurs trip earlier in the year.

(There may be a newer model called Evolution but very similar!)
It was excellent! :D
(I have an OR Gortex paclite and it wets out very easily! :( )
Go with the Event!

I've recently bought a Paclite jacket and so far I'm very happy with it. I am using it in very cold temps for now where I can layer underneath and just have a light weatherproof layer if needed. I always wanted an eVent jacket and if MHW are making them I look forward to being able to afford one through work!
