Doing the cutting quietly while the roads are closed feels wrong. The logging industry usually doesn't wait until road repairs to send off their logging trucks down the roads at insane speeds and doesn't care about other cars...

Just trying to alleviate the Cabin Fever Vicrev.
Goretex is wet through...fingers are numb...not enough atmospheric pressure to get the trangia alight...gas is frozen, my "insert catchy name here) Outer Limits Taffeta gown has wet out and wetgoose feathers are hanging limply out of the stitching and here is this guy, belly achin in a most bellicose manner about keeping it real?!
No, in all seriousness....Tassie is seen as a joke on the world stage.
Not many places with the heritage values that it has.
I can imagine, should we all decide to walk the area together...if this forum was real time...
what a chorus or cacophony of chuckling campers, we would be.
Enough from me...

Given that the current TasPAWS Director is a political appointee with a pro-development agenda - no, they wouldn't make a fuss.

Harder to understand, but I think I am someway there, is the propensity for people to make *&%$#! up to support their opinion. That is my interest in this thread.

aloftas wrote:Hi Geoskid.
Thanks for the kind words.
I guess, in a nutshell, we are given to be stewards of the planet.
Tassie is our patch to look after, to balance integrity, industrialization constraints with access for the appreciation of the natural world.
It is really people from the northern hemisphere who truly appreciate "pristine" as by in large the atmospheric pollution of the northern hemisphere has, in places caused degradation etc.
If we are to be successful stewards of the planet we must learn to adapt to the restrictions of ecology.
The ultimate Art of Bushcraft is to be as a passing shadow over the landscape...this land has been continuously occupied for 50 000 years plus.
We need to afford it the respect it deserves.
I need to shut up, but thanks geoskid, for the opportunity to speak.
Be nice to each other out there.
Make Tassie known as the mecca for friendly helpful inclusive walking.
Safe. Warm.
Considered reason based on experience rather than the brute efficiency of pure technical analysis.
Anyway...enough from me.
Cheers

I don't really give a rats if FT are using cloak and dagger tactics to get the logs or if they are going about this right under everyones noses. Thats hardly even an issue. What is alarming is that in this day and age it is still acceptable to some to be cutting down trees like the ones in these photos. How long will it take for some people to realise we are stuffing this planet faster than it can repair itself. Lets not cloud the really issue with petty little squabbles.

What is being made up in this thread is an alternative story to what has been posted in the public notice by FT. There seems to be a reluctance to accept FT's up front account of what they are going to do.
Some appear to have trouble accepting that Tahune airwalk is having maintenance carried out, and the road is being repaired, and whilst that is happening, taking the opportunity to harvest a coupe.

Thanks Aloftas,
I think humans have appointed themselves stewards (where might they have got that idea from) well before we realized we are just another species of animal. Pulling our heads in is probably too late. Happy to read more.
Cheers

aloftas wrote:I wont get into the theological aspects of stewardship.
What I will say is that we are pretty much the only species on the planet which must modify our habitat and wear clothes for survival..(Except for the rare Bakers Beach type of person)...and where we must modify, the animal kingdom adapts. Look at how a wallaby is at home on a fresh drift of snow...no postholing for that little guy..his nose points him in the direction and off he goes.,,bounding as if without a care and leaving an impression a few inches deep, if that.
No, humans are stewards because of capability, no other reason.
The cerebral coretex and the opposing thumb are a lethal combination.
What needs to happen, is sentience and salience need to collide.
By that, I mean that we must not only be cognizant of our surroundings a the course we are taking, but aware also of the subtleties and "etheric breezes" which are blowing.
Change is coming, and faster than many will anticipate.
We are on a world stage with plenty of overseas visitors. These people need to be accorded the respect they deserve, not to be seen as simply an opportunity for ten bucks a pie and coffee.
We...need to learn to resect the earth on which we tread, look out to the heavens with a sense of wonder, as I can ASSURE you, the heavens are looking at us, with a sense of wonder coupled with despair...
We cant be seen as wood hooking lumberjacks with an interest in minerals.
Timber, mining are essential, but must be held in balance with cutting edge adherence to worlds best practices, and not merely lip service.
Anyway.
